    They typically buy their drives from other manufacturers and rebadge them, often from different suppliers for the same model. My first DVD burner was a Pacific Digital, which turned out to be a Lite-On. I went out a few months later and purchased another, which turned out to be a completely different drive. Both worked fine by the way. Bottom line, no matter what you read, you won't know what you are actually getting until you get home and open the box.

    FWIW: I've used cheap and generic drives, such as Mad Dog, that work perfectly fine. You don't need to buy a name brand to get a good drive. However, by getting name brand models, you often have a better idea of what to expect from the drive.
