I want to convert a bunch of my parents' old home movies on Super8 film possibly to VCD (bought them a DVD player for Xmas). I borrowed one of those optical film-video tranfer boxes; you know, where the lens from the Super8 projector goes in one side and the camcorder on the other. So my Sony Hi8 camcorder outputs to my capture card (Leadtek TV 2000/XP Expert).
What I want to do is capture all the reels of film, add fade-in/out between each, then add in a musical score since Super8 is silent. What would be the best software to do all that?

I would suggest Video Studio. It can do all those things and has a thirty day trial version.
P.S. What is the brand name and model of your optical box? It sounds interesting.Hello. -
Virtual Dub is recommended - free and will do for all your capturing needs.
HUFFYUV codec or a DV codec.
Note : super 8 ran @ 18 or 22FPS (from memory) i know my Dads old super 8 ran @18 fps.
Tips (from learning the hard way)
Your projector is 18fps progressive - camera 30fps interlaced. The ones i did many years ago were 'jumpy' because of this problem.
I think if i had of sped up the projector for the recording then slowed it down at the editing stage it may have looked better.
Try to focus the projector onto the mirror slightly smaller than you need (so as to have a black border) .The black border can be cropped later to achieve the desired resolution.

You could always go out and buy a TeleCine [one of those giant things they use to put Hollywood Movies onto VHS for consumers to grab]

Just saw one on ebay for only $200,000.00 [plus shipping]

-Doesn't really matter wether there is or is not any audio. Your capture device, unless it absolutely does video capture only, should pass audio to your computer. But you are probably not using any audio cables. You can always do your own synchronization of sound, on your own, by hooking up an audio source to your audio in on the box, or even the LINE IN port on your sound card or Mo/Bo's integrated audio.
-If you truly have nothing but a video capture device that your camcorder is connected to, you'll need some sort of audio/video suite software to add your sound. There are tons on the market, it just depends how much you're willing to pay for quality software. If you're making simple personal recordings for just a few times, don't spend money on expensive software. You can probably find some generic ones online for free.
