Read guides. TMPGEnc doesn't handle all kinds on audio compression types. You basically has to extract the audio from the AVI and convert to WAV. Simplest way is to load the AVI in Goldwave, and save WAV.

Then do it the hard way:
    • Using GSpot, take a look at what kind of audio is in the AVI. I'd bet it's AC3, and I'll continue with that asumption.
      Load the AVI in VirtualDub.
Make sure audio is set to Direct Stream Copy.
      Save WAV.
      Rename whatever.wav to whatever.ac3
      Convert to wav with headac3he
Use this wav as audio source when encoding.

You were under the impression that unknown AVI to SVCD was something done during the cofee break?

If I were you, I'd drag the AVI over to the trash can, and get on with my life. Try the guide suggested above of you like the challenge, but I've done it a few times, always ending up with an mpg suffering from sync problems and whatnot, so If I lay my hands on an AVI that's not error free, I simply get a source that is. Even if I think this is a really interesting hobby, there are aspects of it that's best avoided.

Right , It's time to slow down and get back to basics.

You have an AVI which is XVID with MP3 audio.

Run your original file as it is through Virtualdub MP3 Freeze.

Have a look at the log of badframes , how many are there?

  23. its an XviD movie with the latest XviD codec so maybe TMPGEnc canīt handle it? then there must be another tool..

ok....you've worn out your fellow swede so I'll pick up the ball and see if we can finish the game.

1st....I'll assume you can play the XVid file on your computer wherein you can see the video and hear the audio....

IMO, the simplest way to convert Xvid>mpg2 is to frameserve the xvid through VirtualDub > then convert with TMPGEnc at the same time.

    there is a guide Here:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/87270.php

TMPGEnc just doesn't seem to like Xvid so I've found that using an intermediate codec is best. This method also doesn't have you treating the audio as a seperate conversion.....which for the purpose you want is unnecessary.

As far as the conversion time, using HuffYuv would most likely be quicker then uncompressed RGB, but the latter codec may yield the best quality result.

Hey !! I tried exactly what you said. I used Virt Dub and saved my xvid.avi file as a .vdr and then opened tmpenc plus 2.5 and when I went to load the .vdr file it said it was unsupported.????? Now what????

if you saved it as a .vdr, that is the problem....as the guide said, you need to save it as a .vdr.avi. The .avi is the critical DOS extension and must be the last 4 components of the name. Once again, save as: xxxx.vdr.avi

actually, the .vdr isn't necessary except as a organizing designation.

Actually, properly configured TMPGEnc opens .vdr just fine. When you say "saved my xvid.avi file as a .vdr" - do you literally mean that, or do you mean that you start a VirtualDub frame server?
