I'm trying to work out a simple, cheap (free's good) way to convert various Xvid files to MPEG2-TS format, so I can store them on my Set Top Box hard drive. It is a rather generic box with a USB port to which I can record and playback.

Some info from GSpot taken from a file the DVB recorded from TV to the USB drive, ie the output format I'm trying to create (it doesn't mean a lot to me but perhaps will help those offering advice)
    VIDEO_ASPECT_TYPE_PAL PAL

    AUDIO_MPEG_STREAM_ID 0xc0
    AUDIO_MPEG_SUBSTREAM_ID

It seems hard to find a single piece of software that will do the conversion without going to commercial software, which I'd rather not do if I can avoid it.

    Any help greatly appreciated

I don't think any single free software can convert directly to a ts with mpeg2. I would probably try hcenc (or a gui for it like HCbatchGUI ) to convert to mpeg2 and then make a ts with tsmuxer.
