When trying to make a DVD from an mpeg in DVD Movie Factory, I get an error - "drive not ready". How can I fix that?

If you are using version 2.0 of Ulead DVD MovieFactory, then try downloading and installing the "CD/DVD Burning Patch" listed near the bottom of the Web page at the following link:

Your latest issue description suggests you may have an incorrect FIELD ORDER setting somewhere in your workflow.
The basics are as follows:
OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 (Firewire) PCI capture cards always specify Field Order A (Lower Field First);
USB and analog capture devices generally specify Field Order B (Upper Field First);
MPEG-2 video recorded by Panasonic, Hitachi, and Toshiba DVD camcorders and DVD player/recorders is always Field Order B (Upper Field First).
Let's assume you are using an OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 (Firewire) PCI card to capture directly to the DV .avi file format. In this circumstance, you don't have to worry about the option to choose Field Order during capture because all such Firewire cards automatically capture Field A (Lower Field First) DV .avi video. If you use an IEEE 1394 card to capture directly to the MPEG file format, then you should choose the Field A (Lower Field First) option in your MPEG capture settings.
On the other hand, let's assume you're using an analog or USB capture device. In most cases, these types of devices give you the option to choose Field Order during capture. With these devices, you should first try the Field B (Upper Field First) option in Ulead software.
Whether you are capturing, editing, or authoring, adjust your project settings to match the precise video/audio properties of your source media. This allows Ulead's Smart Render technology to work - under many circumstances - to preserve the quality of your source media.
Field Order in Ulead software hinges on the specific type of capture/acquisition device used to create your source media. Check the documentation that ships with your capture device for details.
Hope this helps,

Thanks! I did have Ulead set to field oreder B when making my mpeg - but I also tried Nero, and there was nothing to choose when encoding and I still have the same problem.

Please right-click on the source file so that I can study the properties of the file.
After you right-click on the file, click PROPERTIES.
This should give you a precise read-out.
What does that read-out say?

Those properties are non-standard.
The MATRIXMIXER audio codec isn't a typical DV or MPEG audio codec.
Your video frame size is 640 x 480, which does not comply with the DV NTSC 720 x 480 standard.
Your video codec is identified - mysteriously - as "DV video decoder."
Is it possible you have installed any codec packs?
These can cause very difficult issues.
According to Microsoft:
"Nimo and Tsunami codec packs are untested compilations of various codecs and filters commonly used on the Internet."
"Incompatibilities are known to exist with some of the components in the packs."
"The incompatibilities can cause serious playback issues in Windows Media Player and other multimedia programs, lead to system corruption, and make it difficult for Microsoft Support to diagnose and troubleshoot playback issues."

I am not certain if there's a method to easily remove all of the elements that might be installed with a codec pack.
If I were in your shoes, however, I would reformat c: (system) and perform a clean installation of Microsoft Windows.

I have only one problem which in my opinion is small compared to the rest. I can hear audio from my DVD when playing it on WM9. -
Fixed that by un-installing k-lite then re-installing w/o the audio codec.
