  1. I've heard that if you buy certain brands of DVD+r or -r that when u make a backup of a dvd it will turn out poorly......

I've tried disks from Memorex, SOny and Maxell and so far I've had only a few problems with some disks.......but mostly a-ok.

I can get some cheap packs of disks from Pine, Princo and Ritek......has anyone ever tried these dvds? If so what kind of experiences have u had?

Also anyone have some insight as to what company makes the best disks for the best price?

The totally naked (with NOTHING on the tops) 2x Ritek -R's are the most reliable in my LG 4040B burner. They should be listed as Ritek G03's.
However I have also been using Princo white topped 1-4x -R's recently and have yet to get a coaster...though they only burn at 2x in my LG.
I no longer buy 4x discs since the FEW errors that I have had were at 4X but only in "copy disc" mode. I don't think my DVD Rom drive reads very accurately at that speed....but it "rips" much faster....who knows..
I have also used BenQ +RW's, Philips +RW's, Sony -R's and Verbatim + and -R's with equal success though at MUCH lower quantity than Ritek.

  3. Discs which use the Ritek G04 dye are good, if I had to mention a brand I like TDK, datasafe and bulkpaq (but everyone else appears to hate these).

I have read many peoples' opinions on Princos, and I do not know whether I am fortunate or not, but I have not had many problems at all with the branded 4X media using my Pioneer 106. As an estimate, an average of probably 2-4 coasters per 100, a couple due to user error and a couple due to associated computer malfunctions (running computer for 3 days straight encoding, surfing and burning at the same time etc). At 80c AUD a disc, I don't mind the odd frisbee when I'm generally the cause. They play fine in my LG DVD player so I have had no reason to try any other media.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  7. PC-Magazin (GER) 5/2004 did a review of media types. You can follow the thread where someone summarized it. There are A, B, C, D quality Ritek disks so just be aware of this. I think Traxdata is one of the best Riteks. There's a website with pictures of Riteks and how you can see the uneven dye on some of the inferior Ritek rebrands. The quality of burns is somewhat dependent on what burner you have. We also have a media forum in here.

  8. I have a PLextor 708a......

How do I tell the model number of my disks? I see the media on that nocoasters site but i cant find the media ID anywhere on the disks.

    I have maxell dvd+r 4x and memorex.

So far I've had 2 dvds out of 20 that got screwed up in the last 5-10 minutes of the movie.....

Also any Canadians in here no any good places to get some dvds? (+ or -)

  9. DVDInfoPro can read the media ID and also toggle Advanced Commands at the lower right for "more media info".

Plextor has it's own tools for identifying DVD makers, you can check it out at the Plextor website, but the program works only on plextor drives. Good disk quality and for cheap? Verbatim 8x DVD+R by Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. Where to buy? www.buy.com ---> 10 jewel case 8x DVD+R for $17, buy more than $25 and shipping is free. Start stocking on media!

    Yes.
www.nomorecoasters.com goes straight to the media FAQ

    The raw site is www.digitalFAQ.com
The old URL www.lordsmurf.com forwards to it.

And www.dvdguides.org is a digitalFAQ.com mirror, but is down for a short time (keeping getting crashes on the FTP uploads).

And private paid support forums are at www.digitalFAQsupport.com

I expanded last month. Still not done, but soon if I can get these paying projects off my desk. Money first, hobby last.

Next year I hope to use lordsmurf.com as a place to sell SMURFS toys, so change your bookmarks before then, assuming the plans go through.

I never had a problem burning Pinco's the problem is now 5 months on, copying the data off the disks is next to impossible... These disks have been stored in a closed box and never used....
Ritek G04 printable disk of the same age and stored in the same way pose NO problems whatsoever.
    Not bothered by small problems...
