  1. Hi,

I just installed my Plextor 708UF DVD writer on my Dell running WinXP

I copied a simple file to a Fuji DVD+RW disc using Roxio software that was
delivered w/ the Plextor device. The file happened to be an MPEG file.

I can read the disc fine on my DVD-ROM on my XP Dell machine
I also have a Dell running Win98SE and a Dell Running WinME.
I cannot read the disc in either the 98 or ME machine.
    The 98 has a Toshiba DVD-ROM

Is it usual/unusual to not be able to Read DVD+RW in many DVD-ROM's?
I was frankly a little surprised by this as if I wanted to back-up and transfer data from one device to another, it seems I could not read it on other machines.

I will experiment more later tonight, but am curious if other have this problem often or if it a common occurrence?

    Thank you

Would probably trust others with more experience BUT I did have the same problem on one of my machines. I was using an older Pioneer DVD-ROM and it would read +R's but would not read +RW's. I swapped it out for a Liteon (no other changes) and it read fine.

I'm open to being corrected but I think it's the DVD-ROM, not the OS. You might try reading a +R on your Toshiba.

My generic dvd-rom will read DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, but NOT
DVD+R or DVD+RW. Could be you have same situation as I do.

  4. It is not unusual for an older DVD-ROM drive to not read DVD+RW discs...

Having said that, I have two questions:

    1) Was the file burned using DirectCD?
    2) What model number is your Toshiba drive?

If this is the case, you will need to make sure the same packet writing software is installed on the 98 and ME machines.

  6. Exactly.

I've seen newer computers with DirectCD preinstalled and people writing to DVD+RWs as such and not even realizing it...

A very evil thing to do, in my opinion.
