  1. I have seen a number of guides about converting Bluray to DVD or ripping Blurays etc.

I'm new to Bluray and I wanted to find out how I can go about burning a Bluray disc and watching it on a regular Bluray player and a PS3. I would be getting mkv files most probably. Example would be something like this:

    Code:
    Size .....: 8960mb Video ....: 1920x1080 (X264 @ 23.976fps) Audio ....: DTS 1509kbps Source ...: Retail Blu-Ray Lang .....: English Subs .....: English / French / Spanish
I have a Windows Vista (quad-core) and a Windows XP (Dual Core) PC with a Bluray burner. I'm not very technical.
For DVDs in the past I have used ConvertXtoDVD and I also burn DVD5 and DVD9s at times with either Nero or PowerISO.
In one of the guides, I saw that to convert MKV to Bluray, the choice of software is Multi AVCHD. I also noticed people were
complaining that they stopped updating or developing this software some time ago.

I guess I'm just asking for help to point me in the right direction, or if someone could have a step by step guide on how to convert and burn mkv to a BD25 disc perhaps with a menu (nothing fancy).

    Thanks.

A formal Blu-Ray or AVCHD disc needs to be h.264, MPeg2 or VC-1 video codecs in an m2ts wrapper written to a BDMV file structure.

Beyond that each Blu-Ray player needs testing for other supported codec/wrapper combinations. Read through this thread then ask more here.

Some BD players play a limited number of codec/wrapper combinations from root. Others require a BDMV folder in Blu-Ray or AVCHD disc format. This also applies to the PS3.

  3. So it's not as easy as DVDs, for example. With the DVDs I have converted they would play in any player. Once in a while I would get a region code error, but rarely. I guess I was hoping that with BluRay it would be about the same or at least close.

I will check out the thread you suggested. In terms of getting files online to burn to Bluray, would you have any suggestion as to which (easy to use) software to use? I will then try if it will play on my PS3. I'm hoping to buy a BluRay play in the near future, so I could test on that as well.

    Thanks for your response.

For MKV files use AVChdCoder, BDtoAVCHD or Multiavchd. They will make a blu-ray or avchd compliant video for you. Burn on bdr or dvdr(avchd).

All Blu-Ray players and the PS3 will play a BDMV folder. If you want to distribute a disc, this is the safe method.

My newest BD players will play most files from root without authoring. For my personal use, I simply archive files to BD-R discs as data (no authoring) using ImgBurn.

Now that single layer 25GB BD-R discs have dropped to close to $1/disc, pricie/GB is close to single layer DVDR and less than double layer DVDR..
