Hi, guys:
I realize this is a basic question, but my search on the subject did not produce an answer.
I need to obtain a picture from a movie, I want to use it as a menu still to place the overlay buttons on it. I thought about capturing a short clip and then rendering a single frame in Premiere, but my Photoshop 6.0 does not even have AVI on its lists as one of the recognizable formats (.tiff, .pic, .jpg)
For a example, a tutorial at
www.daileycreative.com/ReelDVD/Tutorial/Tutorial_3.asp
does mention that he captured a single frame and used it as a still, but does not explain how he did that.
Thx walter

if nothing else, play the clip on your computer - pause at the pix you want - use your your 'printscreen' function to copy what's being shown - paste same into any photo editor - clean it up - and use it for what you want.
Always check helpfiles/instructions before leaping... -
If you want the picture in MPEG format, any encoder will do. If you want it in BMP, VirtualDub (free; otherwise plenty of commercial tools).

Thanks, guys:
I am sorry, I composed my previous post in a hurry. Premiere does allow exporting a single frame as a .bmp file, however, Photoshop 6 does not open bitmaps. You can save as a bitmap, but it does not even display .bmp files in "All Formats" mode.
I guess I have to find a video editing program which can export a frame in a format other than bitmap, or to find a graphics program which can accept bitmaps from Premiere and convert them into something Photoshop can swallow.
I'll check out the apps that have been suggested
Thanks again

MS Paint will accept BMP and output jpeg.

This free program will convert bitmap to jpeg.

Sorry, guys: I had another look at the Premiere's Timeline Export function panel; v. 6.0 allows exporting a frame from the timeline also in TIFF, Targa and GIF. Those formats can be set through an extra "Settings" button at the bottom of that dialog panel. Whatever option is set will be the only one available on the main Timeline Export function panel.
I guess we often end up getting to smth through the back door!
