    Hey everyone,

My computer has standard USB ports, and I would like to use the Plextor PX-402 capturing unit. The PX-402 uses USB 2.0....

Will I require a USB 2.0 port, or will it just simply run at my USB rate?

    Thanks

  2. USB 2.0 is backward compatable with USB 1.x

    F.Y.I USB 1.1 is 1.2 MegaBYTES a second.
Don't set your expectations to high for your captures.
MPEG1 captures for VCD are about the best you can hope for with USB 1.1

If it's a USB2.0 device it will run very slow on a USB1.0 port. But you can get a USB2.0 PCI card very cheaply and install it in your PC and it will then run at regular USB2.0 speed.

Many (but not all) USB 2.0 devices will detect and shuttle back to 1.1 (or 1.0) speeds when connected to a 1.1/1.0 port.

A proper USB 2.0 port will also operate USB 1.1/1.0 devices at their correct speed, but be able to run the newer, higher speed 2.0 devices.

My recommendation is to invest in a USB2.0 card. Although the capture device might work at 1.1 speeds, you're not going to get much video quality due to the data rate involved.
