I have an older ATI AIW Pro card that came with only avi capture ability. I want to use one of the newer ati mmc to capture to mpeg. I had an AIW 128 at one time that came with a mmc that had mpeg capability. The card didn't work--gave audio noise but I was able to trick the mmc into working with my AIW Pro card. It worked great for a long time. I had to format once and now I can't get it to work again. Went to the tools section on this forum and found a review that stated mmc 7.9 minimum or 8.7 can be hacked to work on almost all older cards. Anybody know how to make my pro work with a newer mmc? I've tried some of the other software vcr programs and they always have problems. I have a celeron 850 system and w98se. I have a copy of win XP I'm thinking of upgrading to. I'm not trying to capture directly to dvd--just mpeg1 or so to get away from huge avi's.

    JWDOVE,
I have the AIW Rage Fury Pro (128) (at least 5 years old) and I am using MMC 7.7 and do not have any capture problems. If memory serves, the install CD that came with the video card had MMC Ver 6.? . Not a very good or usable app but the newer MMC's have shown a remarkable improvement.
Go to ATI and download the MMC 7.7 ensure you have the right version of video drivers (to match your OS). Install them first, then the WDM driver and finally MMC (aka control panel).
I am able to capture MPEG2 at full D1 without any problems at all.
Check my profile to see the hardware set up. Capturing MPEG2 at full D1 requires some strong CPU requirements (less you get a fair number of dropped frames). My older system was an 800MHz cpu and I could not capture at full D1, just to many dropped frames however, 1/2 D1 was certainly doable and may be an effective alternative.
Back to your topic, I tried to install MMC 8.x (3-9) but never could get the install program to complete. It would always hang about 1/2 way through and I would have to terminate the program in order to get control over the machine. It must have something to do with the installer not in agreement with the video card version that I have. But like I said MMC 7.7 works just fine.

OBTW, last I checked ATI cards do not capture audio only video. So the noise problem could be associated with your sound card.
Lastly, there were no hacks required to install in run MMC 7.7 with my system.

I can make an AIW 128 PRO work with MMC 8.7, but you have to e-mail me through my site on it. It is possible.

In all honesty, ATI MMC 7.7 was better at MPEG-1.

    lordsmurf,
Respecting you knowledge in the ATI arena, MMC7.7 does do IMHO a credible job at MPEG2. I have not tried MPEG1 since I got my DVD burner.
I will email you regarding the install instructions for MMC 8.7

    Lordsmurf rules.
