Why when I create an mpeg2 with the above, does is appear clear only in the upper left corner of Windows Media Player (fuzzy throughout the rest of the box)? These look fine in Nero Showtime.

What I mean to say is that in the upper left, there's a small square showing the whole frame, then the rest of the screent is a big version that's blury, with flahing light, etc.

You seem to have a messed mpeg2 video codec. Use Media Player Classic instead of Windows Crappy Media Player. . You can also download a new mpeg2 codec, or powerdvd or windvd mpeg2 video codecs.

Thanks. But why would Nero Showtime work? And, I just extracted and installed the file - how does it know to associate with my ms media player?

P.S. Are .avi files made with say a canon zr70 interlaced?

Still doesn't work. Small box with a clear video in the upper left, the rest of the screen is the video blurry and flashing.

Computers are fussy things ... either deal with it and don't use Windows Media Player for MPEG clips (no loss there) or re-format the HDD and do a fresh clean install.

Go download and install every codec you can get your hands on and see if that helps.

There's got to be a way to fix this.

When making an mpeg2 - do I choose interlaced or non-interlaced? I'm using an .avi file shot on a cannon zr 70.

Camcorders record interlaced video so when you encode, encode interlaced.
