  1. Hi all,

I'm trying to convert a PAL DVD to NTSC DVD. Now before you start saying RTFG (Read The Fargin' Guides), please hear me out as I've already read them and have some confusion on applying that knowledge.

First some background on my process I'm using:
    - first, I'm ripping the PAL VOB files using DVD Decrypter onto my hard drive
    - Using DVD2AVI to decode the audio to WAV and framserve the video
    - Using BeSweet to convert WAV (from DVD2AVI) to MP2 with the PAL->NTSC (29.97 fps) conversion
    - Using TMPGEnc to convert video and mux the audio (NTSC conversion is set to 29.97 fps).

The resultant MPG seems to convert the video fine. But the audio makes all the characters sound like chipmunks. Upon investigating this further, the video is 3:00:45 (h:mms), the converted MP2 (from BeSweet) is 2:30:47, and the orginal WAV (from DVD2AVI which presumably is in PAL format) is also 3:00:45.

I've demuxed the audio and video from the resultant TMPGEnc conversion (assuming the video is still usable I now have an m2v file) and tried the following scenarios to attempt to fix the problem:

scenario 1 - Mux m2v file with original WAV from DVD2AVI using TMPGEnc. TMPGEnc gives an pop-up error message saying Multiplexing Linear PCM stream to system stream is not supported.

scenario 2 - convert orginal WAV from DVD2AVI to MP2 using BeSweet and PAL->NTSC (23.976) conversion. When I try to mux the m2v file with this newly converted MP2 with TMPGEnc, it gets about halfway thru and then I get a pop-up error message saying Illegal MPEG audiostream.

    Questions:
    1) The problem seems to be with the audio conversion. Any suggestions??
    2) Why is the BeSweet conversion from WAV to MP2 (29.97 fps) so much shorter in time?? I would've expected it to be the same duration as the WAV.
    3) Any ideas why TMPGEnc is giving me these error messages when I try to mux?? Any ideas on how to get rid of them and actually get the mux to work??

In reading the guides, I also have these questions:
    1) some of the guides say to convert to 23.967 instead of 29.97. My eventual target is an NTSC DVD. Should I be converting to 23.967?? I wouldn't think so but maybe I'm wrong.
    2) some of the guides talk about 3:2 pulldown and telecine. Should I be doing my TMPGEnc conversion with 3:2 pulldown or Telecine?? Looking at my m2v file, the video seems fine but I'm just so ignorant about this stuff.
    3) As I've said, my video seems fine. But there's some weird fuzzy stuff around the edges. Any ideas what that is and how to get rid of it??

Thanks for your patience!!! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  2. There is no such thing as PAL or NTSC formats in the audio part. When you use that option in Besweet, it shorten the length of the audio and assuming that you change the frame rate from 25fps to 29.97fps without doing frame insertions. Uncheck that option and you should have the original audio length. You may also use TMPGenc to do the MP2 audio conversion by checking the audio only button.
You may find the video is kind of jerky after using TMPGenc to convert from PAL to NTSC, because TMPGenc doesn't do frames interpolations. What it does is to insert identical frames at certain time period to make 25fps to 29.97 fps and maintain the overall video length. Try other softwares such as Canopus Procoder to do a better conversion job.

  3. so what your saying basically is, that when converting svcd pal to svcd ntsc, all i have to worry about is, converting the video, and dont do nothing with the audio except de-muxing and muxing?

also does this work with pal svcd to ntsc dvd?
    thanks alot!!!
