  1. i got a hauppauge dec 2000 box today only cost £100 and i can use it as a digital box hooked up to my tv also

    picture is great
capture quality is fine near dvd quality mpeg2 should be easy enough for me to convert to avi

    my only question
is it possible to hook a vcr up to the back of it to play in old vhs recordings so i can capture them

i can see no reason why the box couldnt handle the signal after retuning

    cheers

  2. I don't think that the DEC 2000 has an analogue video input like the Nova-t PCI card, so you'll be out of luck. Also, don't convert the DTT captures to avi, just demux them with DS.jar or PVAstrumento and remux as a DVD file with bbMPEG and you'll have a fully DVD compliant file to burn directly onto a DVDR disc. I use a Nebula DTT PCI card for my TV captures and have been archiving broadcast quality masters to DVDR since last summer for well under a quid a disc!

  3. as very few people appear to have the card
i thinkl il just try it
i plan to link my video up to it later
    the only real questions are
1)do vcrs output in anologue or digital
2)can the card handle an analogue input
3)if card can only handle digital then is it possible to make the vcr output digital

    1) VCRs output in analogue
    2) No it can't, the SCART is an output only
    3) No, VCRs output analogue.

The Hauppauge DEC2000 is only a digital receiver for Terrestrial Digital (Freeview). It can output an analogue signal from its SCART socket, or an RF signal from its RF out socket. It can also output a digital signal through its USB2.0 port, but there is no provision for inputting any kind of signal other than a digital terrestrial tv signal from the aerial. It has no capability for receiving an analogue signal at all.

The MPEG-2 files you can capture on your computer from the DEC2000 can be converted directly to DVD via suitable software without the need to lose definition by converting to AVI (then back to MPEG-2 before authoring to VOB files). Mediostream's NeoDVDStandard or a similar DVD authoring program should be all you need to convert the files you record to DVD.

No VCR currently on the market will output a digital signal. They only output analogue.

If you wish to record in digital from analogue sources (such as videotape) you need to buy either a video capture card for your PC or a standalone DVDRecorder.

i thought vcr to tv would be analogue as otherwise old sets without a digital decoder couldnt handle the signal

if you put the rf cable from the aerial into a vcr then through the rf out of the vcr into the digibox
i am hoping that it will pick up the signal from the vcr

i will give it a try tomorrow it should only take half an hour and i cant damage the digibox by doing it

    will post result
sadly i think your right about it not working

but im off for easter and have nothing much planned for tomorrow so i will give it a try

  6. The DEC 2000 will only recognise a digital input. Therefore as the output from your VCR is analogue, the DEC 2000 won't see it. The only way to capture analogue signals is either via an analogue capture card or an analogue to DV bridge (or camcorder with passthrough) via firewire.

  7. sorry wanted to delete this message
    will post findings after scan
the connector between 2 pieces of aerial cable had come apart

i plugged the vcr in before the box and scanned with a video playing in the vcr and it didnt pick up
i thought that would be the case

    worth a try for 15minutes
i have the odd clip from home movies that i wouldnt of minded digitising and sending to family
but they dont warrant a seperate analogue capture card being bought as any future capping i do will be off dvb

will be getting a dvd recorder for the tv within the next year [and im in no real hurry to backup what i have on vhs]
so i can just record from vhs directly to dvd
then edit the clips on the pc so they can be sent over the net or just send the dvds by post
