Dr. Divx is a good little program that can convert mpeg-2 to Divx. If you want something that gives you more control you can use Virtualdub MPEG2, but you will need to have Divx 5(Pro Version) or an Xvid codec if you wish to encode to Xvid.

Open your movie with Virtualdub MPEG2, go to the "File" movie and save as avi. This will create an uncompressed avi file. Make sure you have LOTS of hard drive space.
