  1. Hi,

    Just a quick query about capturing VHS video onto an Apple Mac and then converting it to MPEG so I can make a VCD. Can iMovie export straight to MPEG?

    The trouble I'm having is that after I import my video footage which takes about an hour, I then have to export to Quicktime which takes another seven hours and then convert that again to MPEG1 which takes forever again before I can put it into Toast to make the VCD.

    Surely, there has to be a better and quicker way to do this. I would very much appreciate any advice or hints and tips anyone can offer to help me, please. Thanks

    Yes it is possible to export directly to VCD;
    buy Toast Titanium, it's got a VCD export extension.
    The quality-speed ratio is good.

    But for better quality I use Cleaner;
    1. Export your edited movie back to your camera.
    2. In iMovie preferences change the option "start new clip on new scene"
    3. re-import your edited movie.
    4. In your media folder there's one big DV file with music, effects, tiltles, etc.
    5. Use Cleaner 5 to convert this file to Toast ready VCD.

    This way you don't loose quality when exporting to quicktime and you use Cleaner which has better results than Toast (yes I know it takes a long time, about 2x as long as Toast).

    Hope I helped you out.
