I followed the superb DVD to VCD guide on the Flexio.org page because I wanted to have subtitles and letterbox vcd's. But I'm still not able to make VCD's. My problems start with frameserving VRdub into TMPGE.
I follow the guidelines and I use VFAPI enc. to convert the *.d2v video file into *.avi (takes only a second, is that normal?). Then I open the file in VRdub (which is configured with auxsetup to frameserve). He opens it, I apply the filters which I have downloaded and configured as suggested in the guide. Then I start frameserving and I give a name to the *.vdr file.
I start up TMPGE (where I have the VFAPI plugin and a few others) and I open the file *.vdr. (I click browse, set *.* and select it). But then when I click ok he says that he cannot open that file or that it is unsupported.
What is my problem? Do I have to install another plugin for TMPGE (which one) or do I have to give higher priority to a particular plugin? Do I have to use another setting in VRdub? Or is there a mistake in a prior action I made?
I have another question... maybe that's causing it. I installed the VFAPI convertor to change the D2V into avi, but is it normal that I can't play that AVI in VRDub? I can't see a preview of that AVI file, only black frames. Is that normal?
And a third possibility... is it normal that when i start frameserving the frameserve file has no extension? (no *.vdr in explorer)
These are all suggestions... but please help me... I'd really want to create good VCD's with letterbox and subtitles... thanks!!!

disable virtualdub aviproxy mode(aviproxy\proxyoff.reg). it interferes with vfapi

Ok, thanks for helping, but where exactly can I disable this AVIPROXY-Mode? I can't find it anywhere.
Hope you help me out. -
Okay, I did all this. But everything stays the same. I just can't load the frameserver VDR file into TMPGE.
I doubt it is the fault of VRdub. Is it normal that I cannot play the "fake AVI file" from the VFAPI convertor in mediaplayer? And is it normal that when I apply the filters of smartresize and VOBSUB I'm able to see the subtitles played as if I was watching the movie, but I can only see black frames???
I saw a screenshot once in one of the videoguides where you can see a normal videoframe in letterbox and with subtitles in VR-Dub, in a preview! I only get the subtitles.
So perhaps there's something wrong with my fake AVI file, or perhaps my environmental settings of TMPGE are incorrect. Do I need special plugins I haven't already got?
I have the following plugins in TMPGE:
-AVI2 (opendml) file reader
-AVI VFW compatibility reader
-BMP/PPM...etc. file reader
-Directshow multimedia file reader
-Wave file reader
-dvd2avi project file reader
-Quicktime movie reader
-TMPGE project file reader beta 12f
Is there an additional plugin I need? Or is there a special priority order I need to put these in?
Please help me!!

As Truman wrote; you'll have to install the VFAPI codec. You can find it on the site where you have downloaded TMPGEnc. If you already did this, then there is another suggestion:
When you frameserve from virtual dub, do not give the file just a name (like: xxy), but name it like this: xxy.vdr
If TMPGEnc freezes, press ALT-CONTR-DEL and close TMPGEnc. reopen it, and it will accept you xxy.vdr file.
