  1. I've just tried this product, and it seems to work great. For those of you who are more familiar with it, how far down do you take the compression to. I tested it on pretty large movie and took it down to about 60%, quality seemed great. Im use to shrink but you cant really go below 70% otherwise it gets fairly blocky

I only intend to use this product for those larger movies. Please share your experiences.

I use IC8 for some things. The biggest thing I don't like is that it won't let you compress the disk below 4.31 Gig (or if it will then I haven't figured out how to make it).

I prefer to write less than 4.2 Gig to disks.

  3. I've went to 52% with IC8 with no problems with blockiness or pixelation.

go to http://www.mrbass.org and download the Hidden Settings Editor and just follow his tutorial for the correct settings.

I have tried IC8 and I don't like it. I use IC7. You can search for a list as to why I dislike it. But typically I do not like to go under 80% but I have went as low as 60% and the output was great.

Just some advice...do not burn with IC8. You will also need to rip with DVD Decrypter since Instant Copy does not crack encryption. I would also not burn the pdi files even though decrypter now supports it. I would download pdi2iso and convert them to an ISO file and then burn that with decrypter. I don't really have any basis for not burning the pdi's other than I don't trust pinnacle to do things right, so I like to check the DVD structure before I burn it.

I've switched to Intervideo dvd copy version 2 since like northcat posted earlier, I don't trust Instant Copy 8 anymore. It still has a problem transcoding, sometimes even just burning the movie itself. I probably wasted about 10 dvd-r's trying to copy Badboys 2 using IC8.

From my experience, you got it about right. I have it, also hidden settings. Yes, output can be quite good, but I don't entirely trust IC. And the Pinnacle program file (Instant CD-DVD Suite, etc.) on my computer- JEEZO PETE! almost one full gig. Bloatware. But yeah, I'll use it on a big movie.

Don't mind me, I'm biased, it works okay but I just don't like it. That dratted Studio 8 soured me on Pinnacle. :P

  8. IC8 ran through one movie once fine, but after that I keep getting BSOD and IRQL_is_not_equal_to_or_Less or something like that. CloneDVD 2, IV, recode 2 doesn't BSOD on me.

you can delete the proggys you don't use with this software . It still beats dvd copy 2 by far

If it plays nice with your system it's hard to beat. The latest, 8.05, works very well and is a major improvement, all around, over IC7 (faster, less twitchy and more custom manipulation). As you've noted even in the 50's it still looks good. I usually burn direct, movie only, with AnyDVD and have only once had a problem. I also use it to do final burns and menu elimination with files/conversions created with Nero Vision Express. Your end disc size is different than mine as I usually end up at about 4.23G.

Before Instant Copy I used to use ReMPEG with very good quality even at about 62%. Since the results were nice I've backed up few DVD's with aggresive compression settings (down to 55%) without visible picture degradation (no pixelation and artifacts) using Instant Copy. I eliminate some extras so that I'm normally within 70%-85% range. Results are excellent. That is a compression level that I try to stick to when making a backup. If the situation calls for it one can go much lower to even 50% range. Amazingly although there will be some degradation the outcome is still acceptable. I never transcode and burn in one step. If burn fails you have to do the whole process all over again. Instead I save it to an image file and burn the image later on also using Instant Copy. Never had a single issue. At first I use HD to HD and later HD to DVD rec. So far I must say Instant Copy has worked flawlessly. I used ver. 7 and now ver. 8. No noticable differences in the whole process.

  13. okay folks, maybe I`m doing something wrong, but yesterday I`ve tried to backup Charlie's Angels Full Throttle (with a LOT of extras, like 1.5 Gb)
    full screen with Pinnacle.
Altought the size was nice and correct (miracle??), the final picture became a total MESS. with pixelation from beginning to end.
Kinda funny, cause I used this soft with other movie (widescreen with a few extras) and the final quality came out great.

Of course the size of the extras is a big matter here, but my question is..are full-screen movies harder to the "one-click softwares" to back up than widescreen ones???

Sounds possible to me, cause: more video on screen, more compressing... right?

    ME TOOOO

Not only is the program as buggy as the day is long, but their support system over at pinnacle "uninstall, regdelete, reinstall" is about worthless.

I don't trust pinnacle period. Now IC7 does a good job for me and Studio 8 does a good job for me as long as I use for exactly what it is intended to do.....I use studio 8 to capture, clip and render final clips and that's it. I have never gotten S8 to make a DVD for me, converting DV-AVI always hangs. So I output everything in AVI and use TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG-2.

I have a hard time trusting a software in Instant Copy when they can't even get the output file size to be accurate...they use 1000 MB = 1 GB, when actually 1024 MB = 1 GB. I would think that should be an easy problem to fix...but apparently not.

  16. Very good quality of transcoding in the range of 55%- 75% : over 75% is better to use DVDshrink or other prg...more speed and same quality; under 55% the quality may drops suddenly depending the quality of input. Under 50% the quality will became very poor like other transcoder.

IC8 is not very strong in IFO file. The DVD back-upped with IC8 will not been redeable by other transcoding program due to non legal statements in iFO. If you try to keep menù without extras you can experiences coasters.

When the compression it very high (i.e. 50%) it is better a real encoder (DVD2DVD-R with CCE) : good results until 35% (you can put quite two DVD in one DVD-R).

    bye

Yes, that is indisputable. The inaccurate file size is annoying, and that's one of the reasons I can't quite trust it. And you've done a hell of a lot better than me in getting Studio 8 to work at all.

But for those who like IC, very good, we all know that there are innumerable variables involved in this hobby. Do what works for you. And yes, for a big movie that takes a lot of compression, IC is among the best programs out there. It's my first choice for heavy compression, unless I decide to re-encode in TMPGEnc. I won't use it, however, for run-of-the-mill, lightly compressed, reauthored flicks. JMHO

Just like all programs out there, each persons software/hardware configuration is different. For every person who raves about Norton it seems just as many have problems with it. The same can be said for firewalls, burning apps (Roxio vs RecordNow vs Roxio) etc. One size does not fit all. Luckily there are many programs out there that do essentially the same thing..... so choose your weapon. One size does not fit all. That's why the best software companies are those who provide a fully working trial.

  19. you people who say that its clear with even below 70% compression.. what tvs are you watching these on? because even with IC8.. and doing a 1:1 of family guy season 3.. u notice some hints of compression during some scenes.. this is on 56" DLP/component input.. but on regular picture tube tvs. using s-video.. yes its clear and u cant tell a difference.. should keep that in mind.. it might be clear ro someone.. but depending on tv hardware.. may only be satisfactory..

but gettin back on topic.. yes IC8 is superior as far as quality.. dvd shrink interface is much easier/faster.. and another complaint is output size in ic8 is off.. and the pdi file format.. i just dotn like it.. i hate having to convert using pdi2iso.. i use ic8 for episode dvds which need a lot of compression to do 1:1..

I have IC7&8,and i don't use either one anymore.2 reasons. The estimated file size of a compressed movie is usually way off. This program can waste up to 10% of disk space with bad estimation. The second is the .pdi files it creates.I like to edit out warnings etc. in ifoedit and i don't want to do the conversion thing if i don't have to.The fewer processes you go through, the less chances of errors being introduced.

  21. If quality rather than time is an issue, try Rebuilder.
If time is an issue use Shrink.
If neither are an issue use IC8.

Is there any (relatively) simple way to get around that?
