  1. anybody know any decent free tools or software that will let you clean up old videos. i want to capture some of my old vhs stuff and convert it to vcd or divx, but i'd like to be able to fix some picture problems.

    give magix video deluxe a try.It has some effects. I tried the demo and found lots of tools to enhance VHS-Video (or so they claim). I'm not really using it, because for editing I'm used to ULEAD mediastudio.

    I'm using the contrast/brightness and the DNR (dynamic noice reduction) filters within virtualdub. But beware, if are using DV-Format as input, you have to switch the dvsd codec everytime if you are going from Mediastudio to V...Dub and back again.I'm using regedit to do this. (rename the the key vidc.dvsd to vidc.dvsx and vice versa.

    Read through the "low res processing" and "high-res processing" sections.

    This was the first guide I used when I first started using noise reduction filters and it is a good place to start.
