I made a few backups of some movies so the kinds don't destroy the originals and when I tried to play them back, I had some problems.

They would all play fine most of the way through but then when I got to the ending parts of the movie, it would start to pixellate and freeze and jump around and such. I had no problems what so ever with 90% of the movie, just the last 10% would skip around so much and eventually not let me even play it.

The burner is a Lite-On 411s with the latest formware and burning at 1x speed. The player is a Sony DVP-S360. I'm not sure if the player is causig the problem or what. I had no problems at all with any of the burning using the CompUSA DVD-Rs.

My other cheapie player (Koss KD365) won't read any of the backup discs at all but I blame that on the player (which might get returned because of this).

Anyone have any suggestiosn at all?

  2. I reckon the problem lies in your media, try changing it. Cheap/bad media sometimes causes problems when you get towards the edge of the disc, hence at 90%.

  3. Or do a quick(?) test, shrink the movie to only use approx. 85% of the disk, then try playing it to the end and see what happens. that'll tell the tale. If it is for kids they'll probably never notice the drop in quality, sad to say.

Also if labeling, try not labeling the disc.

  4. In DVD Shrink you can set the maximum ammount of disk to use. If you have some "lower spec" media, set this to 4.0gb, that way you will never use the last part of the disk. It is under view- options or something like that.

Also, reduce the burn speed, this can sometimes help.

Best to try separately though so you can be sure which one is the fault. If you only have a few dvd-r's then do both together. If you have bought a spindle it is worth loosing a couple to get the best combination.

Also, use dvdinfo (on this site) to check the manufacturer code of the disk. This can be compared with Lordsmurfs good/bad guide at www.lordsmurf.com.

I'm already burning at 1x so I can't reduce it any further. I'm using CloneDVD (the Elby.ch version, not that cheap knockoff). I don't think that has a way to set the amount of the disk to use.

I'll also have to try the other movies I've backed up and see if they all have the same problem. Only played with one last night.

Does DVDShrink just do the ripping or does it burn as well? I've never used that program.

  6. From my experience, as I was having the same problem, shrinking the copy to 4.2GB or so will solve the problem. I used to make full 4.5GB copies and had the same problem with over 50% of them. Read somewhere about going smaller and now they work 95% of the time. I am using the same media, same burner, same software, same DVD player so, to me, this had to be the problem.

Just found out that Elby.ch's CLoneDVD program has that feature too so I'm going to give that a shot when I get home and see what happens.
