I dont understand importance of bitrate

When i make a DVD what attention do i need to pay to bitrate? how is it important and what settings should i be using? tnx

The higher the bitrate, the better the quality, and the bigger the filesize. Filesize is dependent only on bitrate and running time of footage in seconds.

Depends on the quality of the source, and what you're aiming to output (VCD, SVCD, DVD). If you're footage is less than around 90 mins, you can use a decent bitrate of at least 6,500kbps. If it's really short, you could get away with CBR. If disk space is sort of tight (especially if there's fast motion scenes), you need to use VBR.

Or, in short, I think you're gonna soon see that you've opened a can of worms and will nead to learn a fair bit and it's not as easy as "shoot, edit, burn".

If you're gonna go for DVD files, look into demuxing the audio from the source and compressing to something like AC3 (NTSC & PAL) or MP2 (PAL, but probably OK in NTSC land even though not in the NTSC spec).

This will mean that it takes up less room on a finite-sized DVD disc, and so leaving more room (i.e. higher bitrate, hence better quality) for the video part of the footage.
