Can an AVI be a MPG file?

IS a MPG file the same as a MPEG2 file?

Will the properties tab tell me if an AVI is a MPEG2 video file?

    THANKS!!

Yes, you have to use an encoder like TMPGEnc Plus to make it an MPEG file.

Almost. It is like saying is a Civic is a honda. Just remember, an Accord is a Honda, too. So an MPEG-2 is MPEG, but so is MPEG-1. Read the glossary for more details.

An AVI file is not an MPEG file. Check the Glossary again.

    THANKS!!
    No problem.

    Hey Thanks!!

I meant does the ext. MPG mean that it is a MPEG file (either MPEG1 or MPEG2, are some other version of MPEG) and NOT some entirely different file format.

I mean could it be that MPG just so happen have the same letters as MPEG minus the E and NOT be specifically an MPEG type file?

also on the AVI, I was under the impression from this artical somewhere around here that went on to say that an AVI is just a container for video and it implied (or maybe said directly) that the specs for the video could be of varied characteristics and encoded methods. (unlike a MPEG2 file which is an MPEG2 file).

I know I am confused, but the article I read did it to me.

    THANKS AGAIN!

Actually, you know more than you realize. The extension ".mpg" means MPEG, which is what you already surmised. You have to use certain programs to ascertain whether it is an MPEG-1 or -2.

AVI is a form of video just as MPEG is. It also has differ formats as well, such DV AVI, DivX, XviD, Huffyuv, etc.

Suggest you get AVIcodec or Gspot They are both free and if you open your file in one of them they will tell you exactly what format your video is. Then you can decdide what you want to do with it.

A VOB contains a mpeg2 video stream, along with one or more audio streams (ac3/lpcm/mp2) and possibly one or many subtitle streams. So, you just have to demultiplex the VOB to get an mpg video file out of it. VobEdit & ReJig are 2 tools for this.
There's a version of VirtualDub that can take mpeg2 as source and encode to AVI, but you might find it simpler to use some dvd to avi application like EasyDivX...
