How does the DVD recorder know when you no longer want to record on a disc? Is it like VHS where you can just take it out at any time and all the information that you have just recorded will be on there, or do you have to go through any processes to finish the DVD?

If you are using a DVD-R disk and you don't want to record anymore then you need to finalize the disk to make it playable on other DVD players. It takes about 4 minutes on the Panasonic that I used.

Do you finalize with the DVD recorder or do you have to go use the computer and get into some crazy computer program that I'm not going to understand?

You do it on the recorder through a menu selection.
