When making a DVD back-up, what is the best method? When using compression it seems that the movies tends to get a little grainy towards the end. Is it just me, I don't know. I am currently using DVD X Copy to back up some of my DVDs and I'm not sure what all the titleset boxes mean. I'm a newbie when it comes to this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.![]()

Its fun to experiment. DVD Shrink is an idiot proof free tool that will rip encription, and copy the DVD to the hard drive. You can then remove unwanted material, like unnecessary language tracks, then compress to fit on a single DVD. You should use deep analysis for the best quality. You will have this option in a menu that pops up when you select "backup". Once it is compressed, you can burn to media.
If you have $17, go to Sam's Club and get InterVideo's DVD Copy Express. It compresses and has better quality than Shrink, but it does not decrypt. You can rip decryption with DVD Decrypter, another free program available on this site. Don't be bashful about donating. You don't have the same editing tools as Shrink to remove unwanted audio tracks. A more expensive version of DVD Copy has this capability (I believe).
I find InterVideo superior to, and faster than, Pinnacle's Instant Copy and Nero's Recode.
Unfortunately, compression is a necessity, and there will always be some loss of quality. Just stand further away from the set.
Good Luck.

Damn!
I guess I made a mistake buying DVD X Copy Platinum. It keeps asking me to download the upgraded ripper free version. The hell with that! Why does that program sucks anyway, I haven't used it that much.

Hey, If it works for you, go for it. There are free tools that work very well. I use DVDShrink, and Nero to burn. I am not as "into it" as much as a lot of the other. I just want it to work.
You bought it. If you are happy with the results, use it. But, play around with the other options. A lot are free, or have a trial period. Can't hurt.
