Which is the right format to record on,PAL or NTSC ,seems i can play most dvds on my player but they can't be played on others

It depends where you live, http://www.psreporter.com/ntsc_system_tv_standard.html
most pal dvds and tvs support both ntsc and pal while many ntsc dvds and tvs only supports ntsc.
