This is from B&H Photo's description of the Panasonic E50:
    • Picture Quality Improvement Function
During recording, TBC and 3D Y/C separation technology assures high-quality images when dubbing an analog source from a VCR or other component. This technology works together with 3D DNR, Block Noise Reduction and Mosquito Noise Reduction during playback to provide surprisingly clear results, even with recordings of old tapes.
This implies the noise reduction is mainly a playback feature. Does it mean that if you watch a disk recorded by this on a different player, you will see "noise" in the recording that was "supposed to be removed" by this player?

  2. From my understanding:

    RECORDING
During recording, TBC and 3D Y/C separation technology assures high-quality images when dubbing an analog source from a VCR or other component.

PLAYBACK - [The above] technology works together with 3D DNR, Block Noise Reduction and Mosquito Noise Reduction during playback to provide surprisingly clear results, even with [DVDs made on this unit recorded from] old tapes.

In other words, the TBC and 3D Y/C separation technology improves the playback signal while recording to DVD. This helps the on the fly mpeg2 encoding look better because the image is cleaner. Then when you playback the DVD (on this unit) you made, you can use the 3D DNR (dynamic noise reduction), block and mosquito reduction for an even better picture.

That's what I get from it.

I hate bump my own post, but...

I should have been more direct about my intent:

If one makes DVD on one of these Panasonic recorders, say from an old VHS home movie, and then plays it on a totally different DVD player, will you see noise (i.e. artifacts) that don't appear when its played back on the Panasonic that recorded it?

The noise reduction features imply that this may indeed be the case. (Maybe this noise is only a problem if the recording was make using a low bitrate?) I'm looking into getting a standalone recorder and would like some feedback about these features. Thanks for any input.

Just to be an obnoxious pain in the ass and double bump 8) ..

I'm still looking for an answer to my above question. I've checked out the manuals and they really don't provide the information for which I'm looking. Any useful info would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to get a standalone whose DVD-Rs only look good on the unit that recorded it.

Have you tried to contact Panasonic and ask them?

  6. Shows how closely I read manuals. I've never even seen that passage in my E50's manual.

    What page is it on?

As a note, I've recorded about 120 hours of old EP home movies and airshow footage using the E50, and I've been extremely impressed with the results! Even some old cartoons I taped off TV on EP VHS come across very well.

You know how Reds and Blues tend to be very 'flecky' on EP tape? The E50 seems to get rid of that almost entirely.

In an attempt to answer your question, I've also playe these disks back on my RV31K and my DVD-ROM (I don't know what it is) and they still look fine. The RV31 is connected to the same TV as the E50, and I notice no degredation at all.

Tell me where in the manual you found this, please!

  7. i have the dmr-hs2 deck. The instructions are implying that some minor noise filtering occurs when it is recording to get a better pic, and you can add even more noise filters on when playing back ANY dvd in the panasonic machine. That is what it is saying.

However i beg to differ about it using a noise filter when it records, as the pic looks/appears virtually the same, albiet a little worse than its vhs counterpart. If it really wanted to use a good noise filter for recording, it should let you be able to record with the filters it has for made for the playback only mode.

especially in older run down tapes the pic looks horrible with this machine and thats when a noise filter (if they actually gave you a true one) would come in handy (still glad i can use my capture card instead)

  8. Oh, alright.

I find that my EP tapes are coming out better when they're recorded to DVD. I agree with what you say about a noise filter for recording; it would be handy.

Sorry yours doesn't work all that well.
