I didn't see my MPEG4 question addressed in any other threads here, so:

    I'm running Windows98SE and
    I downloaded a XVID MPEG4 AVI file.

WindowsMediaPlayer won't play it (Class Not Registered) error.

My DivX player WILL play it on my PC without problem.

    Here's the question:

I want to burn it to a standard ISO-CDR or VCD to play on my stand-alone DVD player for my kid to watch on the TV....when I drag the file into Nero, it says File Format not recognized.

TmpGenc doesn't work on my system at all if I try the VirtualDub>TmpGenc>EasyVCD method of converting to MPG for burning to VCD (Incidentally, I searched forums for WHY TmpGenc does that, and found a zillion other people gettingt he same error).

I downloaded the ffdshow XVID MPEG4 Codec, which simply installed a couple dll files into the C:\ProgramFiles\ffdshow directory. IS there something else I'm supoosed to be doing with those files that'd either enable WMplayer to play'm, or enable Nero to recognize them, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any help,

  2. Can you be more specific as to what is not working with TMPGEnc?

Basically, to get this done, you need to:

    1) Extract the audio to .wav format (usually done with Virtual Dub)
    2) Load the .avi as the video source and the .wav file as the audio source into an encoder (usually TMPGEnc, but you could try trial versions of other encoders).
    3) Burn to CD using VCDEasy or Nero.

Final question is: do you for sure have an xvid and divx codec installed?

FFDSHOW is not the XviD codec. It is a direct Show renderer that always the file to played in a player(it doesn't distinguish between XviD and DivX, even though there is a minor difference). That's not the same as encoding it into MPEG. You want the real XviD codec to get TMPGEnc or VDUB to work.

Thanks for your speedy and helpful reply!
    I appreciate your time.

Let me answer your final question first:
My Control Panel shows I have both the XviD MPEG-4 Video Codec installed and the DivX 5.0 Codec installed under Video Codecs, there are no audio codecs naming either DivX or Xvid. Does this mean I "should" be able to view the file using WMPlayer or RealPlayer; 'cause neither of those will play the file?
Both of those devices give the same error: "Class Not Registered".

In response to your question regarding TMPGenc, I gotta tell you, I got so frustrated with TmpGenc that I uninstalled it, and I've subsequently forgotten the error message I kept receiving. I had looked up the error message and saw so many other people getting the same message, I figured the program must be unstable. However, if your three step solution (which I had been trying) is the way to go at this, I'll work on re-installing it and will write further info on that in this thread a little later.

    Thanks again,

    D Flash

PS: The file I've been having problems viewing is a CFH XVid AVI. I wanted to add that piece of info, in case it's the CFH that makes the difference.

    Gazorgan,

My last post crossed with yours, I was replying to the other poster in the thread. YOUR answer begs the question; so should ffshow allow me to play the file as mentioned in either WMP or RealPlayer?

    Thanks so much,
