  1. My local Walmart in Toronto has started stocking 4X +R 10pks ($21) and 4X -R 15pks ($25).

So I guess waiting for these to go on sale will be the new sport for Canadian Maxell DVD blank hunters.

I didn't think Walmart had sales. It's always "the everyday low price" there.

Oh they do LordSmurf, but they are a rare and beautifull thing indeed. Something todo with lunar cycles and planetary alignment....

I saw -R (MXLRG02) 5pks on sale for $9.99(CAD) once, and I dutifully check back every week since then, just in case.

However with the current (last week) sale at Futureshop of $7.99, I had thought my Walmart days were over.

Sadly, that evil company, just *cancelled* my online order (that I placed the very first day of the sale!) and seem to have removed the products from the online database. Citing that they can't seem to get any more from the manufacturer. (Aparantly 4x discs have *already* gone out of style )

And ofcourse all the local stores have been cleaned out. I imagine that once the sale ends (today) they will be restocking truck loads of them.

    *mutters*

awai: Did you get any of the 4x -R 15pks? I imagine they are spindles? Futureshop currently has an online only "sale" (if you can call it that) for them. However, when I cracked mine open, I found that they weren't true maxells, but instead 1x Ritek G03's (Maxell branded on top of course).

So do you know if these ones are MXL RG02's?

    Thanks,

    Aggies

  4. I didn't buy any as I currently don't need blanks.

But they were spindles, blue/white packaging, discs were yellow topped like the normal Maxell 4Xs and the packaging said Made In Japan.

They might be worth a shot then, i imagine. These sound like the regular MXL RG02. Moreover "Made in Japan" would imply that they are not Ritek's.

    Hmm, I wonder.

The ones I got from futureshop were "Maide in taiwan". Which were there dirty 1x riteks.

Made in Japan and Yellow tops does sound to be Legit Maxell Manufactured RG02s

I guess I'l check my local walmart.

15 for $24.99 is still a pretty good price. $1.66 per disc. Not as good as the previous $1.60 per disc (with jewel cases even!). But anything less than 2$ a disc (CAD) I consider a great deal

    Thanks for the tip awai:

Unfortunately I'm in Brampton. (Not quite officially GTA, heh, but 'Brampton' just isn't as recognizable, heh).

So we'll see what our 2 local walmarts have tonight

  9. Indeed, it's a great deal...
I can confirm that the disc ID from the 15 pack DVD-R MAXELL spindle are MXL RG02.

They do have sales. They just don't call it sale. Instead they claim it to be "Limited time offer" or "Quantity is limited".

Wohoo, 3 spindles total in the entirety of my fair city. Gotta love walmarts erratic stocking practices.

I can second the confirmation. 15pc spindle, with packaging of the same theme as 4x DVD-R 5pks. Even mentions 4x on the side, made in japan.

    These are yellow topped 4x DVD-R, MXLRG02.

Whats interesting to note, is that they come out of the spindle smelling of conconut oil (like the suntan lotion). Closer inspection seems to indicate some sort of alcohol based solvent as the source(Chemistry class taught me that alcohols, esters, keytones, etc can combine to make tons of different odours). I wonder if it was an intentional smell, heh.

This sort of makes up for the cancellation of my Futureshop Order. (I wonder, if anyone was able to recieve any 5pk Maxell online from that sale??)

Nope no spindles here in my Walmart.

Also my futureshop online 5pack DVD-R Maxell order was canceled as was everyone elses, I imagine.

However, luckily I was able to go to the local futureshop store a day before and clean out the DVD-R. Now have 10 5-packs sitting at home. The 50 DVD-R will last for awhile.

The coconut smell may either be limited to the spindle packs or your nose . I cannot seem to smell anything when i open my jewel cased discs.

Also, I am assuming you are ADAM from Brampton. Thanks for your review on the futureshop website. It saved me from buying those ritek G03 spindles, thinking that they were MXL RG01.

    Cheers.

  16. The Walmart at Shepherd/Kennedy in Toronto had about 6 spindles for sale yesterday if anyone in TO is looking.

Also, my local Futureshop (Eglinton/Laird) is now selling Maxell DVD-R 4x in 10 packs (basically 10 of the jewel cases packed together) and 25-pk spindles. Although off the top of my head, I can't remember how much they were. They weren't cheaper than Walmart though, which may be why I didn't make a mental note.

I guess we can now wait for these to go on sale too.

Where do Canadians like to buy DVD-R and DVD+R online? Or at what stores. Looking mostly for ONLINE answer. I get asked all the time. I don't live there, so don't really know what online stores ship overseas/international/CA-domestic with least hassle and taxes, etc.

Re Porph: Yep, that was me . That one really came as a surprise. Ofcourse, with everyone else that continues to happen, I guess thats just par for the course with futureshop.

I was able to pick up 17 packs (all my local futureshop) the first day of the sale, "just incase" the online ones didn't work out. However I'l probably burn through them in no time. It will likely be quite a while before the next Maxell sale of that calibur.

The coconut smell is specific to the spindles. I think I read it in the futureshop review thread infact :P. But if you take a deep inhale, you can also notice the added chemical/solvent aspect of it. Curious indeed.

    Re Lordsmurf:

For Maxell media, it's either Futureshop (www.futureshop.ca - free online shipping anywhere in canada), or the Local Walmart.

For "second string media" I go with either RICOHJPNR01 out of, again, Futureshop, OR (either Maxell +R or Memorex +R)

www.blankmedia.ca to get RitekG04's. A local Canadian shipping out of Kitchener Ontario, I believe. Competitive Ritek prices and extremely reasonable shipping for Canada

Those 3 locations satisfy all my media needs.

(As an aside: I hate the individual store variety you get in the large chains, like Walmart and Futureshop. Some stores can be great, that get everything with lots of stock, while others (typically all the ones close to me) stock in low quantities following little rhyme or reason on when they refresh)

The biggest problem is that online shopping never really took off like it did in the States. Most people I know, even the tech savvy people prefer to buy from B 'n' M stores. A lot more just don't trust the insecurity of buying things online. Fortunately, I'm NOT one of them...

Yup..consumerism in Canada isn't near as much as it is in the States. But then again, it is certainly greater than any other country outside North America (save for Japan perhaps).

    Just puts things in perspective

Most of large Canadian cities are within 100 km from US border. Having this in mind plus 10x bigger and more competitive US market with way more online stores and prices that Canadian retail won't touch, no wonder that Canadian online business has very little (if anything) to offer.

    Yea! Yippee!!

However, these are some spindles made by some strange company called "MAXWELL"

I wonder what futureshop has been smoking.
    Quote Quote
  24. Yes, spools are MUCH better. I'm tired of having the jewel cases lying around. I give them away cause its not worth selling them, and I use CD binders for DVD's anyways.

I hope the spindles go on sale this friday. I picked up 9 packs from the last maxell sale. Can never have too much media

We are talking about the brand new 4x -R Maxells on the website. They are 25 NOT 15 spindle packs. Those 15 spindle packs are made in Taiwan and are crappy Ritek G03. Not bad on their own, but nowhere in the same league as MXL media.

Can anyone verify whether the brand new 25 pack DVD-R Maxells are the same as the jewel packs, i.e. MXL RG02?

    Thanks.
