I have a Dell computer. It came with sonic record now deluxe software. I would like to copy DVD's on to my hard drive. How can I do this? Also how can I remove the region codes so that the NTSC disc will play on Pal dvd players(Like in Australia)? What is the best software out there to do this? Where can I buy it? By doing this will it reduce the quality of the picture? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Shawn

If you want to get started on 'backups' of your movies, then there is loads of software, and everybody has their own personal choices, but for software that will do exactly what you want, and its totally free and full software try these :
DVDDecrypter
DVDShrink
AutoShrinkIso
They will enable you to rip, backup/copy and burn your DVD's without costing you a single penny/dime/bong/buck/pebble, whatever your currency is
DVDDecrypter (or SmartRipper, your choice, same result) will do the job of ripping, removing any protection, and making DVDShrinks job easier and more reliable
DVDShrink can copy an entire DVD as-is, or can copy just the main movie, you're choice. The main movie option needs a bit more work. Copying the entire DVD is as simple as clicking a couple of buttons
AutoShrinkISO will burn the DVD after, and can work alone, or better still, work with DVDShrink, all automatically
You can also use AnyDVD (but it ain't free) to rip the DVD on-the-fly, saving you having to rip it first (and saving HD space), but I prefer DVDDecrypter
NOTE
To copy an entire DVD using DVDecrypter, make sure you have about 8GB space (some DVD's will use most of this, some won't even use half), then you need about another 4.5GB for DVDShrink to do its job, and finally you'll need about another 4.5GB for the temp files created to burn the DVD. Basically you need around 12-20GB to get into copying DVD's, and not have to worry about running out of space
I have a partition set aside purely for this purpose, and another parition set aside for the actual DVD files when I burn to DVD so I don't get confused when I'm busy doing other jobs in-between, but then I'm fussy and getting too technical for you now
These are all free, not shareware, not crippleware and certainly not annoying adware/spware/crapware
All are frequently updated, and very well supported
Have a look here for tutorials on how to use DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink, plus others when/if you decided to buy software
http://www.thescrapyard.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/video.html
I use this lot :
DVDDecrypter (to rip)
DVD2One/DVDShrink/NeroRecode 2 (depends on what I feel like doing)
Nero (to burn)[/u]
Have fun, and remember to read the tutorials, they may seem long and boring but do have useful bits you may need, especially on my site as I've re-written a lot with the beginner in mind, that why they tend to ramble on for those that know what they are doing, but help out beginners who just don't knwo where to start or what to do next -
Thank you very much for the info. I really appreciate it. One more question, will DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink remove the region codes to make it region free?
Thank you
Shawn
