This seems to be the least expensive (after rebates anyway) 8x burner out there as far as I know. I've used KHypermedia media, admittedly with mixed results but it's surprising that not one person has come forth in the Writer guide and admitted to having one of these, with a good OR bad experience. My mom picked up one the first week they went on sale but is too busy to try it out so I have no idea what the skinny is on this thing.

    Anyone...?

  2. So far I've burned 20 DVDs. I used TDK 4x. It burns them at 8x speed using Nero. Using DVDDecrypter takes about 4 minutes longer. The results have been perfect. I was using a Memorex 2.4x previously with about a 10 percent coaster rate. This Khypermedia is 100% OK so far. I'm very satisfied. At $69 I can afford to buy more blank quality DVDs now.

Thanks. I'm about ready to move up to 8x but i'm on a budget too. Low cost drive + high speed on 4x media = big savings as long as it's reliable.

  4. I too have one of these KHypermedia drives. I made sure I got one made in Malaysia so I would have a Benq DW800a drive. It works very well. I have checked the results with Kprobe and they are very good. I have also updated the drive with Benqs dual firmware. Now my drive is DVD+-RW. 8x max for plus and 2.4x max for minus. They will release a 4x minus update in a few weeks. Its nice that this drive does bitsetting too.

  5. dmagic1,

If and when you run a Kprobe on 4X DVD-R, would you please share your finding with us. I'm curious about the quality of the burn with (-) media on the BenQ drive with the dual fw. Thanks.

  6. Yea, I'm hoping for good things.

  7. I bought one last night (made in China) from Office Max. Looked at the rebate book for February, it'll be on sale again in two weeks with $50 rebate (if you can wait and it is still available by then).

Plug and play and uses my existing softwares that I had with my dying SONY DRU-500 (won't read DVD+RW discs anymore). Kind of noisy with vibration on max speed with generic CD-RW discs though, but the results were fast and problem free.

DVD+RW disc reading (DLA) and transferring/copying was fast. Have yet to try burning a DVD+R or +RW. I like it. As long as it does the job then the cheaper the better, I can always go buy another one and won't feel the pain like with the SONY DRU-500, which lasts just over a year and cost me over $300 when it first came out.

Question: if it's a rebadged BenQ DW800A can you update from BenQ's firmware and make it -R & -RW compatible?

  8. I guess I should have reminded everyone about the two drives that come in these boxes.

If it says made in Malaysia its a BenQ DW800A.
If it says made in China its a CyberDrive DX082D .

Yes the BenQ can be flashed with the BenQ offical firmware for dual format.

I bought the Cyberdrive rebadged Khypermedia 8X burner (made in China). So far I have been very happy with it, burned about 30 4X Memorex DVD+R & Imation DVD+R discs at 7.6X, also was able to burn the 4X &2.4X Memorex DVD+RW at true 4X &2.4X respectively, no coaster.

    Dudes,

Just b/c the dvd burner is 8X and you burn 4x media DOES not mean it is going to burn at 8X. To burn 8X you need to use 8X media. This is what Memorex rep told me

This drive and many others definitely write 8X Z-CLV on supported media, some of which is rated 4X by the manufacturer. I have done it and so have many more. Currently I don't know of any drive that is 8X CLV, that is starts at 8X and stays there all the way through like 4X writers do at 4X. You Memorex rep need to get a little more educated.

Is there any way to tell, other than physically removing the drive (it's kind of a pain)? Maybe, say different firmware naming conventions. I'm trying to see if my mom has a BenQ or a Cyberdrive.

    Thanks in advance

You can tell by the model #, DW800A or DX082D.
Don't know much about the BenQ DW800A, but my CyberDrive DX082D has FW 10sB.

The Benq would have firmware B2F7 most likely. Newer versions are B2G7, B2H7, and B2I7. Mine came with B2F7. You can see that at boot up or use Nero CD-DVD speed to see your firmware. There are also other software that show the firmware too.

  17. I thought Kprobe only worked with LiteOn drives? How are you able to use it with the BenQ? I'd like to use it with my optorite drive, but was told it wouldn't work.

You don't need to download the 10sB firmware for the Cyberdrive DX082D rebadged Khypermedia drive, it is already loaded.

So I take it that's the latest version. I know there are updates for the Benq.

  21. For 8X Khypermedia drive there hasn't been a firmware update yet...

    Because I also have a LiteOn 811.

  23. There is a new firmware for the cyberdrive. It's 111b or something like that. You can get it from cdrinfo. Firmware section. I don't know what it does tho.

  24. Also, the bitsetting function of dvdrinfo pro also seems to work. It senses it as a benq drive. But you have to have a disc in the drive before you access this function, or the drive locks up. Changing +rw to -rom changed the book type for me, but stranglely, it stopped working on my standalone. Before I changed the book type, my standalone could read +rw. Changing +r to -rom worked find. Worked in standalone and in another player that couldn't read +r before.

  25. Well, all the +RW discs written or re-written with Khypermedia KDVRW8X are NOT recognized by my SONY DVD-ROM, which is not good.

Tried using DVD Bitsetter ( http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=-1&sid=-1&aid=44 ) and it will not change the disc nor the drive, it actually shut down saying there is an error. I think I'll return it and get something else.

Which drive do you have, the BenQ or the Cyberdrive?

It only gets added when people request it to be added.

I also just bought this and had to ask the guy around the counter to look for a box that said Made In Malyasia. The few left on the shelves all said China. Anyway, he pulled one out and I immediately saw it on the side and told him I wanted it. I pulled it out and checked the firmware and it was the Benq FM. I bought it and went to Benq site and they had 3 updates on firmware, then today when I went to flash it, I checked once more and they had another fm ready, so I flashed with that one. Burnt on an imation 4x-ricoh. Full disc, took 8 min at 8x. Will probably update to the 2x -R here in a bit or maybe wait til next month for the -R 4x firmware. For $69.00 this puppy is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET.

  29. Be sure to get the bitsetting utility on their site for use with dvd+r media. Sets them to dvd-rom. Thats the really sweeeet part.
