Do I really need to get that utility? On Nero I saw the book setting ability to change there. I havnt got the -R yet, will probably wait til the 4x comes out. I usually burn with dvd author, but I did my frst with Nero and it had the option to change it. Let me know.

  2. Mine is made in China. I've decided to keep it since it's so cheap. I use +RW mainly for test burn of movies, if it worked then I can use disc copy to +R. Since I can't get the ROM to read +RW, I'll just burn another one instead of copying it.

I've already sent a emeil to tech support about this issue, hopefully then'll come up with update that will fix this problem.

  4. Khypermedia is one of the only brands that will consistently fail in my Optorite drive.

It's a drive issue for me, this brand has never been a problem in any other drive I've used.

Im all for buying khypermedia rebadged dvdrw at 8x as the price is great, Im not all for buying their media though as other name brand are alot cheaper than kyps media. Kinda strange that I got the Benq model for $69.00 but the kyps media is always so expensive compared to others.
LOL, they should rebadge some maxel or fuji media.

BTW, they will have this writer back on sale again I believe next week, not totally positive as I left the pamphlet in the bathroom with my other reading material. But next week or week after next. Anyway, its gonna have a $50.00 rebate as opposed to the $40.00 rebate earlier, I dont know if the shelf price will be the same or if it will be $10.00 more to offset the extra $10.00 on the rebate. If your looking for a nice 8x +R writer, with a firmware flash now for -R 2x and -R 4x in a few weeks, then this is the puppy to buy!! $69.00 dual format 8x!!
Also, BenQ has said probably 2nd qtr they will introduce their DUAL layer burner. Decisions decisions. I'll get both

I'm not sure about that Nero setting. I haven't used it. Heard that it doesn't always work. Their bitsetting utility is free on their site. Once you set DVD+R to DVD-ROM it stays set even after rebooting. It returns to normal when you set it back to normal. That way you never have to remember to check the box in Nero. Also you may someday use a different app to burn with that doesn't have a setting like that.

  9. If you get the 2x DVD-R update now, you get the 4x update later at no charge. In fact if you look at their update section of BenQs site you will see that update B3A7 is the one you need a serial to use in order to get DVD-R burning support. But the B3B7 and B3C7 are free to download an use without serials and also provide DVD-R support. The catch is that you have to have firmware B3A7 flashed first before going to the other firmwares, or atleast thats how they try to have it.

You find some very interesting things when you look at things with a HEX editor.

LOL, no indolikaa. I dont read those anymore, well not since the advent of the internet. More like TV guide and a tech manual i tend to read when Im constipated, it's called FLUID POWER.

dmagic1, yea, I went ahead and got the BenQ bitsetter anyway. Its all good to go as dvd rom type.

Next stop is an epson dvd printer, either the 300 or I may wait for the newer 200 which is supposed to be around $100.00. By then the dual layer burners will be out, then I'll have to look for printble dual layer discs.
    THE MADNESS WILL NEVER CEASE!.

  11. I picked up a 8X Optorite DD401 drive (Magicspin rebadge) from OM last month for $64.95. It's worked flawlessly. I couldn't be more happy. Around Thanksgiving I picked up 20 Khypermedia 2.4X DVD+R disks for free after MIR from OM. I've written all of them on this Optorite drive and not a single coaster/problem. I'm kinda surprised because they are CMC disks and have a bad reputation. Right now I am using 4X Imation disks (bought a 100 pack from OD last month for $70). These are RicohJPN001's and they burn perfectly at 8X on the Optorite. Movies ripped with DVDShrink take about 9 minutes to burn with nero 6.

Also, for those of you that have the Optorite drive and are still using the older firmware I've found that updating to the newer firmware (120E, 130I) increases rip speed by about 2000k. My drive came with 110E and my rips would max out around 6800k. Now after upgrading my rips max out around 8900k,

  12. Just like to follow up on my Khypermedia / Cyberdrive writer:

Despite the continuing problem with +RW discs everything else works great!

Bought a "copy control" music CD that I like to make a backup for my son to listen in his car but my Sony DDU1621 DVD-ROM can't rip the whole disc with Goldwave. But the Khypermedia drive did it without any problem just like backing up a regular music CD! What a nice surprise!

  13. HI guys i got the one from china cyperdrive or somthing. it seems like a nice drive but the guy at officce max said they would get more on tuesday so should i bother swithcing it for the other at office max if i can. i dont believe i would really use the 4x -r though because it is slower and i was able to change the bitsettings on the burner to dvd-rom. But i was wondering if even for 8x+r is the benq one better. One last thing do you think cyperdrive or whatever will release a firmware that will allow -r. thanks

  14. You might want to for a few reasons: BenQ does do firmware updates now and then. They have patnered with Philips on this philips based chip set and C't did a burn anlaysis on 8x writers and the BenQ had one of the best burns analsyis and they had the NuTech which like CyperDrive has the same Philips based chipset (nexperia) as BenQ and it didn't do as well.
