  1. Ok, I have a simple question. I need to rip a DVD to DV AVI. Before anyone flips, I do own the DVD and it's for my own training purposes, nothing else. I don't plan to sell or distribute it. My reasoning is this. I'm learning Video Editing, but I don't have a mini-DV camera. So I don't have any 720x480 clips that I would like to edit, then burn to a DVD. So I want to take a DVD, then rip it to DV AVI to edit. The reason DV AVI is because it's best to edit with (the word on the street). I can rip to VOBs easy with DVD Decrypter, but then I'm stuck. I tried one program before, but it just makes it a divx AVI, which premiere 6.5 can't read. I think this is a simple thing, I just don't know how to do it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

To each his own. Never really tried this, but if you have a DV codec installed, you should be able to convert a MPG to DV in VirtualDub Mod. I tried a short VOB and AVIcodec reports a Sony AVI, which is what it calls my DV files. I have the Panasonic DV codec installed. Check the compression choices in VD to see if it shows up. Good luck.

  3. I don't have any DV codecs installed I think because I don't have a capture card or DV camera. So can I download these or do I have to have the card?

You can install a DV codec without any card. I give this no gaurantees, as I have not done anymore than a quick expirement to see if it would work.

Do you realize how large these DV files are going to be? How many minutes of footage are you planning on working with?

  6. I know these are going to be huge. From my understanding, an hour of DV AVI is about 13 gigs, so if you have a two hour DVD, looking at about 26 Gigs. I know that's a lot, but then I can edit, do what I need to, then delete them later since it's not important footage. I'm going to try that link later today after work. I'll tell you how it goes. Thank you.

  7. I downloaded the Panasonic Codec from that link and installed it. I then bring in a clip I want to try to change. In Virtual Dub under Video - Compression I see Panasonic DV CODEC. I click OK to select this, then File - Save as AVI.

  9. Has anyone else had this problem with VirtualDub? I'm sure it's something small, I'd just like a little advice. Thank you.

With VirtualdubMOD, I tried it on a VOB from a backup DVD I did. Works OK there, but doesn't seem to with other types of video files. I had the same error with a regular MPG or a SVCD MPG. Try a VOB.
