Well, I have given up Princo White-top 1x DVD-R as landfill. The last bunch purchased had an 80% failure rate.

My experiment with other brands yielded mixed results.

Ritek G03 shiny silver - mediocre with Panny LF-D311 PC burner and Panny E50 standalone. Had to throw out about 20 out of 100.

Ridata 1X matte silver - mixed results, but worse than G03. Had to throw away about 30 out of 100. The LF-D311 seems more tolerant of these than the E50.

Optodisc gold - the E50 loves 'em and the LF-D311 hates 'em. Paid 68 cents each for them. No coasters on the E50.

Maxell branded 1-4x. What's not to like? Superb. No coasters.

So I've ordered 100 more of the Maxells and the 100 Optodiscs are consigned to the standalone only. Assuming the rest of the Optodiscs work OK we will buy those for the E50 and pay the $1.40/ea. for the Maxells for the PC burner.

I've got a headache from all the media experimenting :P

    www.nomorecoasters.com won't steer you wrong.

Where are you ordering Maxell branded in bulk?
Can it beat $1.50 per disc?

Well with the money your likely spending on these test disk maybe you should get whatever works with your stand alone and get a different burner instead?

Thanks for the site Lordsmurf. Every time I see a brand I'm not familiar with I check your site to see if it's any good. Nice work!

    Flaystus,
I've thought about that, believe me. I was at the point that if I had any more trouble I was going to start looking. The problem with that is I'd have to start from scratch finding a media that it likes. I hate throwing away blanks.

    Handyguy,
I think I'm going to stop searching for price first and go with the reliability. I like a good deal but not if I have to throw half of them away :P I might even join Indolikaa in the Taiyo Yuden camp ($1.99 ea) if the Maxells give me the slightest trouble. So far, no problem.

I can understand that, something I read on this forum lead me to buy some really cheap disk when I first got my DVD burner, now mind you cheap was like $2 per 1x disc. Eventually I gave in and chunked 'em but I saved those bad disc for a long time out of a desire to not throw them away.

  7. I've gone through the same "learning curve" as you, Capmaster.....haven't looked back since and I'm a happy camper. Use only Maxell and TY with awesome compatibility and burn quality.

I buy my Maxell's from www.shopperwiz.com. Great selection of retail media. 25 packs are 30 bucks...buy 4 for about 126 bucks (including shipping). I've only bought Maxell printables from them...usually buy yellow tops from Walmart...TY, I buy as Fuji's from Officemax or K-mart. Yes...K-mart, 5 packs for about 10 bucks....

  8. I have learned to steer clear of all cheapo media. Even if it burns great today, will it play tomorrow? You just can't trust the stuff. Another good source for yellow-top Maxell jewel case media is, of all places, Walgreens. We don't even have one near us, but you can buy them online and, with a large enough order, get free shipping. You will probably pay tax though.

Last week, they had 10packs of Maxell DVD-R 4x media for $14.99, so if you need it quick you can run in the store. On larger quantities, it sounds like shopperwiz would do you better.

I had my wife try to get four of the 10-packs when they were on sale at Walgreens. She accidentally got DVD+R. When I went back to exchange for DVD-R I had to inform the counter person that there is a difference between + and -. Then the manager found one box left and went to ring it up and the register said "$24.99", so I told her they were on sale. She checked the sale flyer and said "this says the ones on sale are "for Data and Video. This box doesn't say that"
After assuring her they were one and the same, since ANY DVD can record data or video, she finally changed the price.

I cringe when I think of buying any DVDs at Walgreens, but the price was good. I checked Walmart since they're supposed to stock them. They were supposed to have a 10-pack for $19.99, but all they had in stock was DVD+R, and piles of Memorex, but not the right Maxells in the 10-pack. Their 3-pack of Maxell was $6.88 - a little steep.

Walmart had Sony but they were over $2/ea. I don't remember the exact price. They also had those blanks that look like film reels - Imation I think they were.

Pioneer (PVC) is gone. You'll be buying old stock.
Maxell (MXL), MCC and TY is top shelf.
SONYD04 and PRODISCS03 is about equal.

Fuji is a brand, stocks TY and PRODISC and RITEKG03 and others.

It's all listed out on the site.
