  1. hi there,

i´ve been burning dvdr for some time and i have had once in a while a burn dvdr with what i call "black spots" due to the fact that the dvdr after burning presents some darker spots in the surface that seem to be spots where the burning process did not take effect.
normally this is due to some particule of dust on the surface of the disc on the moment of the burning.
    my questions:

    1. the dvd writer has some kind of burning process that allows it to skip that area where it cannot burn due to the dust particule and burn the data in the next "good" surface?

    2. if the awnser to point 1 is NO then how can i prevent the dust particules to appear in the surface of the discs?

    note :
i be been always very carefully with the cleaning of the dvdr before burning in way to get them free of dust before burning.
and this has always work but since yesterday it seems whatever i do the discs come out after burning always full of dark spots in the surface.
i´ve tried to rip them imediatly to test them and they have been able to rip without any problem but my doubt is if my stantalone player will play them without skipping or freezing.

anyone has had this kind of problem? do you verify the surface of disc after burning to see if it is uniform?

any help on this will be apreciated. thanks in advance

Keep your writer under water in the bathtub. This keeps all
dust out of it , and helps keep it cool also.

Never remove it from the box it was in when you bought it.

Or you could try to make the room the computer is located in as clean as possible. By one of those super duper air filters and put it in the room near the computer.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

Come on now guys, lighten up. . Unless you are in a very low humidity area, 10% or less, dust shouldn't be that big a problem. Remember the disc spins, most dust flys off. Get a can of canned air and blow out your burner occasionly. If static is a problem, use a humidifier or keep your computer covered when not in use. You might get an antistatic cloth to wipe your discs before burning. If dust clinging to your discs is causing a problem, there are things you can do. Just as the other posters have surmised, I suspect you have more of a problem with your media quality than static electricity and dust.

    thanks on your opinions.
i dont smoke. i just have lack of space and because of that the pc has to be in my bedroom. but basicalli i never had this problem. i think the burner has developed some kind of static.
i am trying to do the humidifier tip and the antistatic cloth to clean the dvdrs before burning them.

    to all the others:

i hope it doesnt happen to you...

    Compressed air on the disc.
Take the drive apart when it acts up and clean it.

Nothing else to do but work in a pro clean room.

You can minimize the dust collecting in your drive by creating positive pressure and filtering the air coming into the case. Have slightly more air being forced into the case through filtered fans than is being exhausted through fans. Get a case with a filtered intake or use something like a vent filter from the hardware store or even just cut up a pair of your wife's, girlfriend's, neighbor's, your... pantyhose. :P

Smoking puts a heavy strain on optical drives. Having smoked myself, I have carefully cleaned the lens of my regular CD player more then once, as well as my computer CDROM drive. I quit smoking before I got my first CD-RW (which was in 1997) but I do know that the very fine smoke particals of your cigarette smoke is VERY HAZARDOUS for the lens of your burner.

If you are capable enough you can open it up, and use a special lens cleaning fluid to clean it up after a year or 2 - in case it starts acting up.

Do this test: Take a thin napkin. Take a puff from your cigarette, and then hold the napkin tight before your mouth when you exhale. Now, of course the results should scare you enough for health reasons alone, but it will definitly show you the crap that also makes ceilings look yellow, and will also attach to the lens of your optical drive......
