Help on CD-RW on DVD player

I have a dvd player (JVC xv-d723) that supposidly won't play cd-r, cd-rw, or any recorded material. But, however I found out that it will play VCD made with the Memorex CD-RW 650mb discs. These are really old from around 1999. The ones that work look like this:

So, I wanted some more and went out and bought some memorex cd-rw 700mb. But, they do not work. Here is the ones that didn't work http://mac-pro.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/mem20rw.jpg

I looked up my dvd player here on the list here that tells compatibility and such but didn't find very much information. My question is why does it play this type of cd-rw and not the other? What causes it to recognize and play the one type but not the others? I would like to pick up some of any kind that will play. Thanks.

I would point to some freak biological accident involving your old media and some radioactive "goo" that it came in contact with in shipment from the plant. Kind of like the Ninja Turtles.

Okay, -rw of any kind are usually pretty sketchy when it comes to standalones. Have you tried any high quality cd-r's? Every batch of disks that comes from a plant is a tiny bit different from the previous batch. It was probably just a really good batch or a really good burn. Good luck finding the disks. You'd probably be better off buying one of those new cheap-o dvd players that play anything you throw at it for $30 or $40. It's either that, or experiment with lots of different kinds of disks.

I was thinking it had something to do with the dye used? Does anyone know anything about that?
