Ok I finally got my new HD installed. A maxtor 250GB which I partitioned into 2 HD (a 50GB which holds my OS, and a 200GB storage). Now this is my problem. Since I'm booting from the new HD which is drive I, I want to rename it to be C. I kept the old C drive in my comp and I'm planning to use it as a secondary storage or video encoding. I also have another drive in my comp so i can't exactly switch the master and slave either. My new drive is connected trough a SATA card and I tried to rename the drives through the admin tools of WIN XP but it wouldnt allow me to since I was obviously the drive I'm running windows off of and C is called a Page File. Anyone know of a way to rename the HD so I can get started on formatting my C drive.

  2. hmm..

i woulda used drive image to copy the contents of the old harddrive to the 250gb, then used partition magic to partition it the way i wanted (50/200), then popped in the old harddrive & formatted it..

hmmm well they're both in my comp right now actually. I booted my system from my new drive but the weird thing is that all the programs on my start menu points to the C drive version and not the I drive. So I should use partition magic to rename it?

  4. Are you sure you are booting from the NEW drive? Did you select the partician in your BIOS as the boot drive? I am not sure about XP but in 98SE you whatever drive you select as the boot drive will automatically be labeled as the "C" drive when it boots regardless of what it was labeled before.
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

Yea I'm positive. I set the primary hard drive to my new one and then set the boot priority to my hard drive and it was named the maxtor one. so it has to be the new one yet it's not set as C. Not sure what to do at the moment

In my version of XP, if you double click on "My Computer", then right click on your boot drive a menu should drop down with "Rename" as a selection.

That's the drive label, not the drive letter.

Oops ..... you're right! I didn't read very careful. I always label my boot drive "Boot C" (which also has the normal designation C: right after that) to avoid getting mixed up when I have multiple drives in a rework, or rebuild so I'm sure to duplicate partitions to the correct drive. (if you mix an old drive and a new drive drive that both have primary partitions (Win9x) they will come up as C: on the first drive, and D: on the second drive, and then the partitions of the 1st, and then the partitions on the second... which tend to confuse) What might work would be to unhook all but the boot drive, then reboot to see if XP renames it to C: and then readded the other drives in the order you want them desigated on successive boots. I've done this when I end up with my CDROM being D: and my second partition being E: I would unplug my CDROM, reboot ... check for C: & D:, and then shutdown and replug in my CDROM and reboot. May not work .... but just an idea.
