I am trying to back up a dvd that has both wide and full screen video available through a menu. Because of this the disc is a dual layer dvd. How can this be backed up if I only want to backup the wide screen portion and not the full screen?

Thats way too complicated!! Is there a way to just ake the widescreen vobs and mux them with the 5.1 ac3 audio stream? I dont care if its identical to the original dvd. Idont even care if it has a menu. I just want the video and audio together on a watchable backup. If i want the extra features I can play the original.

Easy peezy that is.
load up dvdshrink . Click open files. Open the fodler. Click on a title and click preview play button. If it is the one you dont want, set the compression to "still picture"
The main movie you want then probbaly will not require compression anymore, but if it does, it wil be very little.
(I did "the usual suspects" the other day this way. The letterbox I made inot stil pictures, shrunkk it to 300 MB. Absolutely everything else on the disk was uncompressed and pristine. includint the menu and chapter points etc. -
or whats even better than using shrink to make still pics is to use the free tool titlesetblanker. Using this you no longer need to make those unwanted vob title sets to still pictures (which in some cases can still take up a lot of room). Just use titlesetblanker before shrink and it makes htose unwanted sets a 10k dummy file!!!

CONS
DVD Shrink- Re-authoring leaves any menu non-functional
TitleSet Blanker - Aspect Ratio still exists
CloneDVD - Not free but there is a trial. Also, Aspect Ratio still exists -
I tried it usong dvd shrink. It worked fine except that the main menu, whae played is useless. It just plays right trough it and starts the movie. I dont really mind though because my dvd player has the ability to change audio tracks during playback. So at least I can get to my 5.1 DD. Thanks for all the advise guys!!

Try DVDStripper/MenuModder. Strip the aspect ratio you don't want to keep with DVDStripper and still keep the menu functional. You won't be able to completely strip out the aspect ratio selection menu, but you can use MenuModder to disable the button of the aspect ratio you stripped out.
