  1. I have authored (successfully) a SVCD for computers which plays fine with many computer DVD players I've tried. But I'm also trying to get the SVCD to play on set-top players.

I use Sorenson Squeeze to create the mpeg files, and DVDit PE to put it all together.

I've tried numerous settings in Squeeze, including the "default" for SVCDs, but they don't seem to play on my set top player (even though it is listed as being compatible on this site---the JVC XV-S502SL)

    Here are my video settings:

    MPEG-2, Bottom field first, 4:3
    2200Kbps, NTSC, 29.97fps
    CBR, 480 x 480, I Frame=15

    Audio settings:

    MPEG layer 2 audio
    224Kbps
    Sample rate=44.1KHz stereo

I've searched the web and it seems that all the above settings are correct.

DVDit does give me a non-discript warning when I burn that the video is not compatible with set-top players, but it doesn't say which parameters are wrong.

I read something on this site about burn speed. Does this matter? I have a 52X burner, and maybe I need to slow it down?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in Advance!

  2. Have you looked in the DVD players section (look over to the left under "other") that the DVD players you are experimenting with support SVCD?

Mine doesn't, and my understanding is that may don't especially those made before the wave of commodity DVD players based on commodity components in the last year or two.

One option you have is to stick a VCD header on the files http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick and then author a VCD. This works for my player. I encode MPEG2 streams in TMPGenc, remux to add the VCD header and then use VCDeasy to create a VCD.

It doesn't provide all of an SVCDs features, but it does provide the relatively high-quality video.

Try authoring and burning your mpeg with VCDEasy, it too will tell you if there's anything wrong with it.

Your dvd player has to specify if it can play svcd's and vcd because my panasonic s35 has this feature listed in the manual..

  5. Thanks for the tips. I downloaded VCDEasy. Now I just have to learn how to use it. I did create a SVCD with my files playing back-to-back, but I'd like to have menus and that sort of thing. On my first glance at the VCDEasy menus and options, I didn't see how menus can be created and used.

Back to more surfing and learning!
