I've noticed (espcially in the DVDs are Dying thread) that there is scant to no mention of Maxell disks.
I've been using Maxell DVD-R disks for a few weeks now. They're made in Japan, and seem to be good quality. The colour on the underside is a pinkish-red, like cranberry ginerale.
Are these disks going to last?
Thanks for any assistance!

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say "yes".
To be more specific, I'd say "Maxell discs will probably have a longer than average life compared to other media".
You only hear good things about these discs. So much so, that they are my #1 disc when quality counts. Anything I"m doing that I want to LAST, I use Maxell (Manufactured, not rebranded) media, expressly for this purpose.
Do we know for sure? Unfortunately no. Not enough time has passed. In 4yrs time, all DVD media could end up trashed, due to unforseen difficulties. But based on results "so far", I'd say you are definitely being as "safe" as you can, if you go for maxell discs.
Personally I burn two "categories" of discs. Things that are very important, and must LAST = Maxell. Things that aren't so important, mostly just convenient (I don't 'mind if they don't last too long) I use RitekG04's and RicohJapanR01(Memorex +R), simply because they are cheeper.
Hope this helps

I got a 5 pack of 4X Maxell DVD+R's for Christmas. Their code was something like RICOHJPN or something similar. They burned fine and play fine, and even actually registered as 4x with my TDK420N.
I'd love to have more of them as soon as their price gets down to at least $1.20 each.
However, I starting not to like buying any 'brand name' discs. They all seem to be rebranded. While aggies11 says he gets Memorex branded RicohJapanR01, the last 100 pack I got from Memorex were CMCMAGR01. It's like russian roulette. I'm going to try out some Riteks and if they do well, I will probably just stick with them. At least then I know what I'm really getting. -
the maxell's I get are the rg02 ones, and have had excellent ratings on this page: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=330#comments
search for maxell to find your disc, all and all maxell is good media. -
Just to clarify, ala assemblage's comments:
The maxell I prefer, are the 2x-4x DVD-R. More particularly, in 5pk jewel cases. These are the only ones guarantee'd to be manufactured by Maxell. I don't believe they manufacturer *any* type of +R media. So any +R maxell is likely rebranded, which I dont' consider "true" maxell (and thus, wouldnt' endorse it's quality). I pick these up when they are at $2 per disc (CAD)
The RicohJPNR01 that I get, are Memorex DVD+R, again in 5pk Jewell Cases. I wouldn't touch Memorex -R. Haven't seen anything other than Ricoh, out of those 5pks.
Spindled media is obviously a different ball-game. It seems that you have an increased chance/risk of getting rebranded media. It's not worth the extra hassle for me at this point.
