  1. just wondering what ya'll thought. i have read alot where main concept is faster and equal in quality then tmpgenc. i currently use dvd2avi, tmpgenc, vcdeasy to backup all my movies. do you think it will be faster to use main concept to do them or should i just leave well enough alone and contiue to do what i have been doing?

  2. IMHO, MainConcept was much faster on my machine but TMPGEnc was better quality.

  3. ok so you dont think the quality was equal? and you dont think the time advantage was worth the change in software?

  4. Not in my case.

Time is not an issue with me because I have multiple machines. If time was an issue, I'd upgrade my computer instead. I run Athlon 1200s and they are not known for their TMPGEnc speed!

Have you tried a side-by-size comparison yet?

  5. no i have not. and time is not an issue for me either. i do all my encoding at nite when i go to bed and let it run while i am at work so when i get home i have 4 or 5 movies enocoded and ready to run through vcdeasy to do all my chapter selection menus and burn.

  6. Try it. A subjective test is always better than an opinion in this hobby. Especially mine.

I'm not overly happy with MainConcept... I still use Procoder or TMPGENC first.

I have somewhat different opinion. I use mostly MC 1.4 and prefer its output over TMPEG (sharper, much faster, TMPEG is sometimes muddy). This is my favorite (beside Pinnacle Edition 5.5 MPEG2 encoding). Very flexible, can throw in lots of different stuff, never stalled, super stable.
Procoder is on par with both (but not better). Especially for format conversions PAL<->NTSC (which i perform on DVAVI level) final encode with MC is very clean and sharp. One would have to be an expert to tell which one is the original. I just love it.
