  1. Lo mates.
I have just purchased a Liteon 811s (the shops homepage says so and the package also says so)
But when i tried to update firmware for 811s
the program told me that i did not have a 811s i have 851s!?
Even Nero and DVD decrypter identifies it as an 851s
Whats the difference between these two?
Should i take it back to the store and buy another brand?
I am also thinking of an Pioneer DVR-107.

I also bought an 811 that's identified by the computer as an 851. I don't think there's any difference- if you look at newegg.com in the description is gives both model numers- "Lite-On Black DVD-Dual Drive, Model LDW-811S/LDW-851S, OEM". I got a good deal on mine ($130 after rebates) so I eneded up buying a 2nd one.

Why? Just because the model number on the box doesn't match the one your computer gives?

Do you or anyone else where there is a "recommended disk" site for liteon?

I just returned an 811, in a Pac Digital box as defective, and got a replacement that is an 851. I think there is SOME difference, as don't think they simply change the numbers.

I intended to post the size of the FW update to reflect this but found that all the FW is the same size, to the byte. Curious, unless it is X bytes capacity and they write SW to use every last byte.

Haven't even burned with this one yet, might have another dead duck.

I know I wouldn't worry one bit that I got a higher model number. Rather, had I given them an 851 and they gave me an 811, would bitch. Last generation and all that, y'know.

Have to check to see what IS the difference.

    Cheers,

    George

  6. I'm guessing what you have is the OEM model of the 811.

Same functionality, the different model names are to identify the source of the drive, i.e. retail drives are '811', OEM drives sold to builders are 851.

Primarily for differentiating warranty terms between the drives.

Mine, an 851S in exchange for an 811 defective, taken from the Pacific Digital box at the store before my very own eyes. NOT an OEM vs a Retail V.

Bad part is, Nero 5.5.10.54, whose site says it is supported, will not recognize the g'damned thing.. Can't use the SOB. Has to go back tomorrow, to see if the SW in the box is diff from that which came with the 811. How in the hell that can be, do not know.

    Cheers,

    George

I started using Record Now DX 4.6 about 6 months ago (looked at version 6.x a couple weeks ago and went back to 4.6). I like better than anything else I've tried which includes Nero 5.5.xxx (several update versions), Pinnacle Instant Copy and a couple others. It has no problem with the 851.

  10. The 811 and the 851 have different innards. The pick up head is different and the 4x version (451) already has the 8x media calibration information in the eprom so it is easy to upgrade to an 851.

I have had both and the 851 is the better burner. I took the 811 back and got a 411 which was actually a 451 which I then upgraded to an 851.
