A complete stab in the dark here but I'd guess it's an MP3 file.

mp3 is a pretty darn good guess ! we have some really good people on this board that can figure out the toughest stuff !

since its 2 channels (stereo) , no point to convert to ac3 5.1 .. maybe no point to convert it to anything depending what you are going to do with it .

  4. It's not a 5.1 file so converting it to 5.1 would be redundant, I believe it can be done (dont remember what program does this) but it wouldn't be a real 5.1 .ac3. My suggestion is to just encode it to 2.0 .ac3. I am assuming of course that this is for a dvd? Try BeSweet with the proper plug-ins and codecs.

  5. yep..trying to convert stereo to 5.1 is really just spinning your tires.

    Think about it..

    - If you're trying to convert it to 5.1 that means you have a 5.1 receiver.

    - If you have a 5.1 receiver then it's also got Prologic/PrologicII capabilities anyways...and I'll let mr. dolby figure out how to span that stereo signal. He's probably alot better at it than I am anyways :P
