  1. I am looking to buy one of these recorders and needed clarification.

When you use the VR mode on a DVD-RW, can this DVD be read on a computer and edited?

Do I need special software or a certain brand DVD player? I currently have a Sony DRU510A DVD recorder in my computer.

Assuming it can be read by my computer, what would be the best software to edit and convert? TMPGenc?

Also, how easy is it to edit the VR disk in the Pioneer 2100/3100(for example to take out commercials)?

Can you edit a DVD -R disk, before finalizing it on this machine?

Lastly, any general comments on this particular recorder and would you recommend it?

Yes, VR mode discs can be read in a computer drive provided you have the right software/OS. I think it is more the software/OS you are using more than the drive. If you are using WinXP, you may have problems reading VR mode discs. The only software I've come across so far that works with WinXP is Power Producer 2.

The best MPEG editor is Womble MPEG2VCR, but it costs $100. TMPGEnc DVD Author is not able to edit on exact frames like MPEG2VCR can, but it will work if you're not a perfectionist.

I don't own a Pioneer, but I have a Sharp which is pretty much the same. Editing VR mode discs in the Sharp is a tedious process trying to get to the exact frame you want. It seems like you have to press the <> keys a hundred times just to move a few frames, and as the manual states, if you screw up your edit points then select delete - what's between them is gone for good with no way to recover it. However, it does give you a preview option so you can view how the cut will look before you actually delete anything.

    DVD-R discs cannot be edited.
