Upon lordsmurf's wise advice I have been trying to use the MMC 8.1 for doing some captuing on my new AIW 9000 Pro card. Sadly, I cannot get it to work.

Since ATI offers basically no troubleshooting support, I was saddened to find that the Troubleshooting section of the lordsmurf website had been emasculated. I would guess because of so many frustrated users asking for help... like me!!

I cannot get this program successfully installed, no matter what I have tried. After each of 3 unsuccessful attempts I cleared out all ATI files, folders and registry folders with no benefit to the next attempt.

2 things happen.. the installer hangs at the end with the message: ATI Display Drivers: Setup filed to run installation, The remote procedure call failed". But, the display drivers do seem to work. Also, when I run the TV tuner it crashes within 3 seconds (ATIMMC caused IPF in CONEXC.DLL). When I clear that crash, it follows with an "ATIMMC caused an IPF in KERNEL32.DLL" crash. If I turn off the TV tuner before closing the window for the first IPF, the 2nd one is avoided.

I have run the ErrorLog to see what is happening. A few WDM failures and at the very end of the log, 4 filters do not complete loading up... the last of which is NERO Audio Encoder. I no longer have NERO installed. I have searched the Registry and C drive and there is no Nero Audio Encoder anywhere. Very confusing.

I have Win98SE. To install MMC I killed all non essential programs. I have cleaned out ATI per the Rage3D suggestions and even used RegCleaner and DriveCleaner to find strays and the Nero Audio Encoder. Nothing found.

Would it be helpful to post the contents of the logs???

Any help would be REALLY appreciated..

    Too bad.

I contacted Nero and they suggested running their Nero Clean Tool but it did nothing. It's sad but Nero Tech Support was useless from the first to the last message (about 10). I demanded escalation but they probably didn't know what that meant. When I first mentioned the Nero Audio Encoder being on the ATI log, I was asked "what is Nero Audio Encoder?". Must be off-shore tech support. At least, let's hope so.

I would have thought that someone on this hallowed forum had seen this scenario before but no one has come forth. ATI MMC and ATI Support have such terrible reputations that either it works or it doesn't. Your lucky or you're not. Caveat Emptor at its meanest, even if it is new!

I have Ulead VS working good so I am afraid to mess around with it anymore. My next move would be to re-install Nero Ultra and then uninstall using the Nero Clean Tool. Good luck and please report back.

  4. Kernell32.dll is a display driver problem.
From your limited description, sounds like you yanked and old video card out and shoved the new ati in.THIS WILL ALMOST NEVER WORK.
I would suggest formatting your hd and re-installing windows, and building your o/s around your new video card.

Wrong. Actually, I did a clean ATI install after having fully uninstalled the prev ATI files. MMC actually worked until I tried Nero. Hasn't since. The Kernell32 IPF happens after the COMEXC.dll IPF. The log clearly shows where the problem is. Nero Audio Encoder.

At this point, a reformat may be necessary to rid myself of this Nero crap.

You're having WINDOWS errors. Nothing to do with ATI or Nero. Maybe Norton WinDoctor will help you, maybe need a full reinstall (reinstall OS on top of itelf). Maybe read MS KB for ideas. Maybe just suck it up, reformat (or add a new boot OS to dual-boot).

Well I got news for you.Ati is the worst for un-installing itself.Your clean install isn't clean at all.Like I said, reformat your HD and yank all your cards xcpt the Ati,clean install Windows, install the ati, install the sound card etc checking for issues each time.

  8. I have seen this before.
At this point in the scenario however, I'm afraid Lordsmurf and Marshalljames are correct in that you may have to re-install windows.
Just so you know though, this most likely could have been avoided.
May still be possible if you have a restore point still set for before you tried the first install.

    1. Per ATI's instructions. Make sure there are NO programs running in the background during installation. That means antivirus, internet, Soundblaster's "CTHelper.exe" if you have SB. And yes, Nero. and so on.

    2. If you have integrated sound, make sure you are using the latest drivers available. TV wonder's and AIW's do not alway's play well with integrated sound. Especially Realtek. but others as well.

3.Make sure you follw ATI's instructions to the letter.

    4. If there is a feature in mmc you don't need or won't use. Don't install it.
    You'll be better off.

    5. Always set a restore point before installing anything on your system.

I have installed many of these cards. Most of the time without any serious problems. But now and then, something like this happens. It's frustrating, but it can usually be overcome.
If anyone can think of something relevant I might have missed here, please feel free. Lordsmurf?

    Hope this helps.

Addendum: Go to Start - Run - Type in "msconfig" - click "ok" - click the "startup" tab - look for anything that has to do with Nero, such as "startsmart", and uncheck it. If you see "cthelper" or "realtek", uncheck it. - reboot.
(be extremely careful in msconfig. Unchecking the wrong thing will crash your system.)
