    HI all,

When trying to install the driver I downloaded from the HIS site I get the following message:

Setup cannot proceed because of the specified directory path plus the installation folder name exceeds 88 characters.
Please shorten one or both the specified limit and try again.

I have installed many drivers over the years, this is the very first time I've seen such a message. Appreciate a little help to get this driver installed.

Try copying the driver to desktop, abreviate any long names, and then install

note: You may have to restore the long names to uninstall properly

  3. I am truly curious.

What exactly is it about the error msg and instruction that you do not understand? It's too long, shorten it.

Technically, you should only be limited to 254 characters, so their limit is a bit unusually short. For some reason, they wrote it that way.

As for why?, you might just as well ask, in my favorite example, why didn't they call it Bob? They didn't, they chose an 88 char limit, you probably have a longer than usual storage directory where you parked the file.

Personally, I don't like parking stuff on my desktop and avoid using it as a storage location. Just make a Install or Drivers directory on the root of one of your drives. In fact, you could call it Bob.

It's odd you chose Bob as a title, it just happens to be my name and to top that off, the number plate on my car is BOB88 .... do I know you or visa versa ..or.. is this just a coincidence ???

  5. That is actually a stock answer I use when I tell someone to save a file. They ask me what to call it, and I respond "Well, you could call it Bob". Then they ask " Why the hell would I call it Bob?", and I say "Why the hell would I know what YOU should call YOUR file? Use a name that describes to YOU what YOUR file actually is."

This comes from two things. One, many moons ago when I was in college studying programming, I named my first progs Snoopy, Linus, and Charlie. Later, when I needed to re-use parts of one of them, I realized that the names I had chosen did absolutely nothing to identify the file.

The actual naming of " Bob" comes from a northern Ohio car dealer commercial, whose commercial had the tag line " That's Bobb Chevrolet, Bee - Oh - Bee - Bee Bobb Chevrolet", repeated twice, rather frantically.. Everyone and I mean Everyone from that area and roughly my age remembers those commercials.

This was also re-inforced by Microsoft Bob, which was one of the absolute dumbest pieces of software I ever encountered.

Never been to Australia, though I have often thought of it. I still remember as a much younger man when the Australian government would pay for your plane ticket if you wanted to move there.

    Hi Nelson,

Coincidence, had to be. Thanks for taking time out to respond, appreciated.
