I just got a miniDV camcorder and of course it came with no firewire cable. So I went to my local Radio Shack to pick one up. Looking at the selection, the 6 ft. cable was $31, while a 14.5 ft. cable was $5! I really only wanted a 6 ft. cable, but geez...
So I know that with analog cables such as video, etc., that you lose signal with longer cables, and noticed on the package that it is recommended to not go over 14.7 ft., but will there be much difference with this length vs. the 6 ft?

i wouldnt buy a 14.5' firewire cable from radio shack ,,,
and yes -- there iis a difference in data errors in longer cables -- least cheap ones (also picks up spurious noise)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I checked RS, couldn't find any $5 firewire and the $31(US) 6' cable is vastly overpriced. Check one of your local camera stores or Staples and get ripped off for a lot less (And better quality) As BJ_M said, not from RS and not a 15ft. cable for a camcorder.

go to www.newegg.com
go to the cables section. under the brand name "generic", you will find 3-6 ft cables for under 5 bucks. ive bought 3 of these so far. they arent made very well, but they work perfectly. -
I trust newegg with everything I buy, and they've never let me down. But how can these cables be so cheap? When you say they are not made very well, is it the connectors or what? Wouldn't cheaply made cable also probably introduce the problems described by BJ_M?

when i first bought my camcorder, i got a 40 dollar monster firewire cable. that thing has like braided metal on the outside and could probably get run over by a car and still work. so comparing the ones i have from newegg to that cable, they are made cheaply. i dont know how to explain it, its just that they are more flexible i guess you could call it. the connectors are fine. and comparing captures ive made with those and the monster cable, i have had no interference at all. these cables are definetly worth the 5 bucks. i would say buy one. it will probably cost about 10 bucks with shipping, way cheaper than radio shack or best buy

I guess I'll just tuck away my long dangling firewire for a special occasion. :P
