  1. Okay,

I have used mac the ripper to rip a couple of movies and have them stored on my external firewire drive. Now which program(s) to shrink them to fit to one dvd and maintain at least decent quality. I will burn using either toast 6.0 or using idvd. Let me know the best way to proceed

Go to galactica's sticky at the top of this forum for a tutorial on using DVD2OneX and Toast 6.

Why? What's wrong with galactica's method?

  5. not saying there is anything wrong with using DVD2oneX but I am interested in seeing if there are any other programs out there that people are using that are capable as well. Plus I don't feel like spending 49.99 euros (~70.00 USD) at the moment if there is a shareware program to play with at this time.

  6. Yes there are alternatives DVDRemaster comes to mind, and FFMPEGx has a 9>4 option for movie only shrinking. But DVD2OneX works very well. As for the price, I suggest you check your currency conversion rates. 49.99 x 1.224 = 62.19 according to Watson's currency conversion tool.

  7. thank you very much, I was guestimting the currency exchange anyway but you know what I mean. So DVD2oneX is the preferred program and I can accept that. I just want to play with a program to get the hang of it and not have to go way out of pocket to experiment with.

DVD20neX is so great for the following reasons
    1. small size of the app, hey itsn ot even a meg!
    2. Simple userface, browse and click
    3. Fast and results are reliable
Sure you have to buy it, but believe me you get what you pay for

DVDRemaster is an alternative, i tihnk its only 10 dollars less than dvd2one.
    1. Sible userface, browse and click
    2. Can be fast or slow depending on your settings
If you are really hard up for the cash and cant afford the extra 10 then this is great!

Ffmpegx works but its not a point browse and click. Its 15 dollars, so less expensive yes. Does it work? yes, i ran the steps just to see it work, but honestly I like dvd2one the most of them all

Besides, all my tutorials use dvd2one
[man you think they were paying me!!!]

  9. Thanks Galatica,

I appreciate your honesty, and I might yet end up buying the DVD2oneX but I do like to see the options that I have before making my decisions.

I still have forty-two installed on my HD. The last I checked, it still works. And it's free. I also remember doing things like this before DVD2oneX came out. There are a few other ways as well, they just take time, lotsa time. Forty-two is probably the best Free solution.

Gee, I need to tell that to the ten DVDs I have that were done with 42. I used it when it first came out, it took 9-10 hrs on a Dual 1.25 but it did re-compress DVD9 to DVD5. For a lot of people. I just tried the last version (1.62), it choked on the DVD function. The only thing I use it for now is VCDs at least that was working a couple months ago.

I booted from my Jaguar 10.2.8 partition and the old installed 42 version 1.6.1 worked fine. Went back to Panther and removed everything 42 then reinstalled back to 1.6.1. I kept getting an Applescript error. Finally, by using the support files from 42 v1.5 and the app v1.6.2 DVD mode now works in Panther. It just takes time, lotsa time. That's why I bought the PC version of DVD2one long before the Mac version came out. Plus, 42 is movie only, I like full disk mode.
