  1. I really hope someone can help - this is giving me a real headache.
Basically I am trying to convert all my old VHS tapes to DVD.
As my VHS recorder (A Toshiba 726 B) is able to playback both PAL and NTSC fomats I have collected a number of each format over the years.
The recorder has no Video out socket or s-video so to achieve connection I have used a scart adapter (scart to 3 phono/s-video) connected to the scart out socket. A composite cable connects this to the composite in cable of the USB adapter of my PC.
The software I use (ULead Video) is capable of reading both PAL and NTSC. When I play and record PAL tapes there is no problem but when I try NTSC, though sound etc is OK the picture is only in black and white.
Can anyone suggest a solution please?
    Thanks
    G

Instead of connecting the video composite output to your capture device, have you tried connecting it to a TV? On some PAL video machines, NTSC will output in black and white. If this isn't the case and you can see colour on your TV, it is going to be in the setup of your capture software. Somewhere there will be an option to change the video format between PAL and NTSC. Correct for the UK is PAL-I, for the US it is NTSC-M (I think, but no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

  3. Thank you for that
yes, I do get colour for NTSC when VCR is connected to a TV.
I have tried the options on my capture software. When I set it as PAL but play an NTSC tape the picture freezes, though it is in colour. If I switch to NTSC setting I get a black & white, but moving picture.
I'm beginning to think it must be something to do with the fact that the Video player converts it ready to be played on a PAL TV.
This must be subtly different from pure PAL or NTSC and I don't know how to set the software to receive it properly.

  5. Thanks Mark

I understand - is there a simple solution then or do I just forget my NTSC tapes?

  6. the simplest, and probably cheapest, solution is to try and find a US VCR for sale in the UK... try ebay?

The cheapest way is to buy a really cheap bt8xx(x) PCI card and capture PAL60. Then, you encode it as NTSC and that's it...

  8. Hi everybody I'm also having this problem...

    SatStorm:

You mean with Dscaler and tweaked drivers or something?
I've tried this. Have you sucessfully done this? If so it
would be nice with some guides.

    I use virtualvcr to capture PAL60 with a 704 x 480 framesize and 29.97fps.

The "secret" was easy: Set PAL60 input and capture as you do with NTSC. You end up with an avi that you encode as NTSC.

And yes, I have in mind a guide for PAL60 capture. But, I don't have the time to do it

  10. Ok... I can't get this to work and it's so frustrating!...
Maybe you could please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I install the tweaked drivers.... I open VirtualVCR.... On "Video" I choose 704*480... I change "device settings for "video capture filter" under the "Devices" tab to PAL_60 and change frame rate to 29.97 (I've also tried 30). Then I start capturing.

I end up with a really wierd avi file and lot's of lost frames... I have a hauppauge pvr card and a computer with 2.6ghz, 7200 rpm hd and 1gb RAM with WinXP... Can you see where the problem could be?

I wish it was possible to capture with dscaler......:/

The problem is that Hauppauge win tv PVR doesn't capture avi from what I know...

Also I don't think that win tv pvr is a bt8xxx card. It is a hardware mpeg 2 capture card from what I know
