I bought a black drive, model 451S, made in December 2003, firmware ver.6.
I initially bought another DVDRW drive, but was dissatisfied with it's compatibility with DVD-r media. I bought Matrix brand DVD-r 4x, and the Liton 451s drive is burning every disc error free at 4x, and burns my CD-r's at a blazing 40x. It writes a full DVD-r in 14:30 to 15:00, and a full CD-r in 3:00 to 3:20.
So far, I've tried 4 types of CD-r media, and the drive burns all at 40x, error free, and 2 types of DVD-r, which burned at 4x, with no errors as well. I built a micro ATX pc, so having room for only 1 drive, the 451s is perfect for my needs. Where most DVD burners lack at CD burning, the 451s excels with 40x burning.
I picked up the drive for 148 Canadian dollars, and am currently using 4x Matrix DVD-r's, a spindle of 50 costs 52 bucks.
If your looking for a high performance drive for a low price, BUY THIS DRIVE! no other drive in this price range can give you the compatibility, and fast CD burning speeds this drive offers. Highly, highly reccomended.
