i transplanted my overclocked workstation into a ten year old 8 cubic inch fridge...

heat is no longer an issue... my edison bill is, however, a different story.

Why not use it has a heat exchanger in your central heating system? Put the heat to use.

thanks... everyone thought i was crazy

i was surprised not to find anything like it on the web... found some pretty nifty water cooled systems (alot cheaper to operate i'm sure)

now i need a mobo/proc combo that i can really overclock...

    any ideas?

  7. AthlonXPs are good overclockers.

    lol!
    That's awesome!
I wonder how much one of those refrigerators goes for?
And I doubt my parents would like the idea of a second, yet smaller fridge being plugged in in the same house, and not used for food!
Plus, my room is so damn small, according to me and my needs. I have two desks, one is my computer desk that cannot be used for anything else, and then there is a normal desk for doing homework and drawing and stuff. Then I have like no closet in my room so I have to use a bureau thing to keep my stuff in. And I still have the same bunk beds from when I was little, and I use the top bunk as yet another place to put stuff on, like boxes where stuff I have ordered comes in, clothes, and old hardware sometimes. Hehe... no space for a frige in here for me, I think.
    Great idea, though!

  9. Pretty awesome.

You could actually just buy a Vapochill case, costs quite a bit of money though. http://www.vapochill.com. You could actually get lower CPU temps then that by using a Peltier TEC (thermal electric cooler). One side gets COLD while the other side gets hot. Peltiers arent good for a novice computer person, cause one of the problems is condensation on the cpu.

I have to say though, thats pretty original, hehe. Great job

Oh my god, man... I went to that site, and I was all enthused from reading all of the stuff at that site. Then I found the link to their only reseller in the USA, and the damn thing costs more than a computer!!
    WTF are they thinking!?!?
I wonder if they actually sell any of these things...
How and why would you pay more for the cooling of your PC than the PC itself?
If something is going to cost that much more than $500, it better give you oral sex, make you breakfast, increase computer performance by 400%, and cool the damn PC... JEEZ.
    lol
Bunch of wackos... selling heavy-ass cases with a mini-frige inside that you can't cool your softdrinks with. Wow... outstanding. Just incredible.

Those super coolers are really only any good if you intend to run a 2Ghz P4 @ 3.5Ghz or whatever. But why not just get a Sun Workstation for that kind of money? 8)

TIbrO, my modem needs cooling... downloading that file from ICQ is gonna take forever! 2.67Mb/488.61Mb done so far... lucky you have cable...

it was a 10-15yr old fridge i got free after my first place of employment closed its doors...

btw- somebody told me fridge compressors have a huge magnetic field that would potentially interfere with pretty much the whole computer (including erasing the drives....)

It could be a possibilty that you encounter some data corruption... how long have you had it for? An easy way would be to ring/Email the HDD manufacturer and ask them, the only problem is persuading them that you are sane, hehe

the tech specs for my HD/DVD/CD/Floppy give acceptable operating temps, max thermal gradient, and relative humidity levels... all of which are well within limits (except the floppy... has a very narrow operating temp/RH)

how might i measure a magnetic field?

btw- been using this contraption for about 2 weeks uninterupted

It would be hard to accurately measure the EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) of the working fridge. I cant think of anything that you could do apart from buy a special device to measure it and then you would have to find out what kind of interference the HDD will put up with. You can try shielding your computer from interference if it is too high, I wouldnt know if it would need it though. Emailing the HDD manufacturer would be a good bet to find out more. Also, seeing as the fridge is so old I would guess that it has a relatively high EMF, where as todays products surpress the interference they create more. However, I am purely speculating here, you would need to ask someone with field-knowledge on the subject.

P.S. Who needs a floppy anyway these days?

  18. I thought you were kidding... until I went to the web site.
I'll say this much, it is original. I'd worry about the humidity and condensation.

For those looking for less extreme solutions the following site has a decent selection.

  19. The mini-fridge idea has been around forever. Check out any extreme overclocking forums like hardforum.com or forumoc.com you'll see some more intense things. Like liquid nitrogen cooling, having a compressor from a fridge actually pumping liquid freon onto the CPU, massive peltier assemblies, evaporative water coolers, and a hell of alot more. My PII runs at around -30C and is encapsulated completely in insulation. It really is quite fun...
